Griffins Defeat Raiders to Even Record at 4-4

Three players reached double figures as the Chestnut Hill college women's basketball team got back on the winning track with a 63-53 win over Shippensburg University Wednesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins even their record at 4-4 with the win.  The Raiders fall to 1-7.

Avery White and Bridie McCann led the Griffins with 13 points apiece.  Emily Sekerak added 12. Sekerak and Kaitlyn Carter had six rebounds apiece.  White led the team with six assists. Caleigh Edwards had five rebounds and three assists  while Carter led nine different players recording a steal with three for the game

Chestnut Hill led wire-to-wire, scoring the first 14 points en route to a 20-2 advantage after one period. Caraline Herb led six different players who scored with six points on two three point field goals.  The Griffins' defense held the Raiders to just 1-for-16 shooting from the field in the quarter.

Shippensburg turned that around in the second quarter, making six of ten shots to slice into the lead.  Herb's third three point basket of the game gave the Griffins their biggest lead of the game at 31-11.   Shippensburg scored the final two baskets of the quarter, and the Griffins went into the locker room at halftime with a 31-15 lead.

Chestnut Hill continued to lead by double digits and increased their lead to 19 with 4:19 left following a Lindsey Lane layup, 39-20.  The Raiders followed with an 11-2 spurt to reduce the lead to ten points heading into the fourth quarter, 41-31

McCann hit three straight baskets in the fourth quarter to extend the Griffins' lead to 15, 50-35. Shippensburg, however, continued to battle, cutting the lead to single digits as the game entered its final minute.  The Raiders pulled within six, 58-52 but White, Lane and McCann sank five free throws in the final 21 seconds to thwart any further comeback attempt. And push the lead back to ten before the final buzzer.  White and McCann scored 16 of the Griffins 22 points in the period.

For the game, the Griffins shot 45.1% (23-51) from the field, while the Raiders made just 34.5% of their shots (20-58).  Neither team had made a free throw through the first three quarters, but the Griffins changed that dramatically in the fourth quarter, connecting on 11 of 14 shots from the charity stripe to finish the game with an 11-for-18 effort.  The Raiders made four free throws in the period.  Shippensburg did out-rebound the Griffins 38-28 while also committing 24 turnovers (leading to 19 CHC points off said mistakes.   Chestnut Hill also 16 steals on the night with every player seeing action on the court recording at least one

The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, December 9, 2023, hosting Kutztown University.  Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Sorgenti Arena.
