The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team saw a five point lead evaporate in the final 50 seconds of play as Kutztown University rallied to defeat the Griffins 53-51 Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins fall to 4-5 on the season while the Golden Bears improve to 2-6.
Emily Sekerak equaled her career high with 22 points on the afternoon, connecting on nine of 14 shots from the field and adding four more at the free throw line.Â
Bridie McCann added 15 points while
Avery White chipped in ten.Â
Caleigh Edwards led all players with ten rebounds, five assists and three steals. Sekerak and
Kaitlyn Carter had six rebounds apiece while White had four assists and three steals.
Casey Remolde led the Golden Bears with 16 points while Abbey Hearn had 15.
Remolde scored ten of her 16 points in the fourth quarter as Kutztown rallied to win the game. The Griffins had trailed by three entering the period before a three-point bucket from White put her team ahead 39-37.  Chestnut Hill built their lead to as many as six points, 48-42. Remolde sank the first of her three three-point baskets at the 3:12 mark to cut the Griffins' lead in half 48-45. Sekerak added a pair of free throws with 60 seconds left to push the lead back to five 50-45.  Remolde then sank two more three point baskets, the last with 3.6 seconds left to give Kutztown a 53-51 lead. A last chance shot by Chestnut Hill came up short and the Golden Bears had the upset win.
The Golden Bears scored first to open the game before Chestnut Hill went on a 15-5 run to take a 15-7 lead with 3:31 left in the first quarter. Kutztown outscored the Griffins 8-2 over the final three minutes as the Griffins held a slim 17-15 lead, heading into the second quarter.
Neither team produced much offense in the second quarter as Chestnut Hill maintained their two point advantage at halftime 27-25.
The two teams had just three field goals apiece in the third quarter. Two of those, however, were three-pointers from KU's Hearn and the Golden Bears added four free throws to outscore CHC 12-7 in the period to take a 37-34 lead into the final quarter.
For the game, the Griffins connected on 21 of 56 shots from the field (37.5%) while Kutztown made 19 of 52 (36.5%). The Golden Bears made eight three point baskets to CHC's three while both teams were basically even from the foul line. Chestnut Hill and Kutztown both grabbed 34 rebounds and the two combined for a total of 37 turnovers (CHC-18; KU-19).
The women's basketball team returns to action for one final game before the Christmas break, hosting Penn-State Abington in a Monday matinee on December 18, 2023. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
