Seton Hill University used a dominant second half as they pulled away from Chestnut Hill to earn an 87-60 win in the "Battle of the Griffins" Saturday afternoon in Greensburg, Pennsylvania.
The game marked the first time these two teams have played each other. Seton Hill improved to 5-2 with the win while Chestnut Hill fell to 1-8.
Chestnut Hill placed three players in double figures, with
Adam Angwafo coming off the bench to score a game-high 15 points (5-10 FG, 5-6 FT).Â
Noah Charles added 14 points (6-12 FG) and a game-high five assists while
Argel Pettit IV chipped in 12.Â
Neal Hill led the team with six rebounds.
Seton Hill had four players in double figures, led by Caleb Whitaker's 15 points and nine rebounds. Gabe Gillespie had 13 points and nine rebounds. Jimmy Moon (14 points) and Ryan Meis (11 points) rounded out the double figure scorers for SHU.
The two teams battled for much of the first half with neither team leading by more than six points. A three-pointer bucket from Pettit gave CHC their first lead of the game at 18-16 and another three-ball from Charles pushed Chestnut Hill's lead to three 23-20 with 8:49 left in the half.  Seton Hill then exploded for 14 straight points to go up by 11, 34-23 with 4:25 remaining. Four straight Chestnut Hill baskets then cut the lead to three 34-31 with a minute left in the period. The two teams each scored twice over the final minute as Seton Hill held onto a 38-35 advantage at halftime.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Seton Hill opened a 47-40 lead, but Chestnut Hill battled back to pull within one via an 11-5 run, 52-51 with 12:55 left. Seton Hill countered with a 13-4 run to take a double-digit lead 65-55 with eight minutes remaining. Hill's basket with 6:06 left, pulled CHC within eight 68-60. Hill's basket turned out to be Chestnut Hill's final points as Seton Hill scored the final 19 points of the game to pull away with the 27-point victory, 87-60.
The two teams took 58 shots apiece with Seton Hill being the more efficient squad, making 33 of 58 (56.9%) to CHC's 22-58 (37.9%). Seton Hill also made 12 three point baskets while Chestnut Hill had only three. Chestnut Hill was an efficient 13-of-15 from the free throw line (86.7%) while SHU shot just 69.2% (9-13). SHU was also dominant on the glass, outrebounding Chestnut Hill 45-20, including a 15-7 advantage on the offensive end, leading to 19 second chance points for the victors. Chestnut Hill had just six turnovers to SHU's 12, outscoring their host 15-6 in the points off turnover category.
The men's basketball team returns to action on Sunday, December 10, 2023, when they take on nationally ranked California University of Pennsylvania in the second game of their western Pennsylvania swing. The Vulcans are currently ranked #24 in the latest NABC coaches poll. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
