Chmiel Powers Griffins as Team Clinches a Playoff Spot

Emily Chmiel recorded a double-double and led nine players in the scoring column as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team won their sixth straight conference game and clinched a spot in the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 67-44 win over Alliance University Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins improve to 11-3 in CACC games and 16-8 overall with the win.  CHC moves into a tie with Holy Family University for second place following the Tigers loss at Dominican earlier today.  First round CACC Tournament games will take place on February 28, 2023.  Alliance dropped to 3-17 overalland 2-12 in league games.

Chmiel came off the bench and scored 18 points (6-11 FG, 6-6 FT) in just 19 minutes of action.  The sophomore post player also grabbed ten rebounds for her second double-double of the season.  Chmiel also added two blocks and three steals. 

Four of Chmiel's teammates added eight points apiece with starters Abbey Spratt (2-2 FG, 3 FT) and Bri Rider (2 3FG, 2 FT) leading the way.  Avery White came off the bench and sank two three-point baskets along with two free throws, while Lauren Crim added a three-pointer and made five free throws.  Bri Hewlett added seven points and Morgan Orloski sank a pair of three0-balls late to chip in six. 

Leah Miller had seven rebounds and a block shot while White led nine different players with assists, recording a game-high three on the afternoon.

The Griffins, who never trailed in the game jumped out to a 17-8 lead on the strength of 50% shooting from the field, with Chmiel making all three of her shot attempts and Spratt, Rider and White all making a three-point basket.  CHC closed out the quarter on a 9-0 spurt, with Chmiel scoring all six of her first quarter points along with White's three-ball.

A 10-2 run midway through the second quarter pushed the Griffins' lead to double digits 31-14 with 3:14 left.  White and Rider both made their second three-point bucket of the game and Chmiel and Morgan Sterner each added a field goal.  Two baskets by alliance closed the gap to 15, 34-19 at halftime.

The Griffins maintained their double-digit lead throughout the second half with alliance closing within 13 on two occasions.  CHC pushed their lead to their highest margin late in the fourth quarter following two more free throws by Crim at the 3:52 mark to make the score 61-37 before settling in for the 23-point win.

Chestnut Hill held Alliance to just 30% shooting from the field, the 12th time this season the team has held an opponent to 35% or less shooting from the field.  The Griffins are 12-0 in those games.  CHC also lowered their defensive scoring average to 53.6 points allowed per game, tops among CACC programs.  The Griffins shots 41.3% (19-46) from the field and made 20 of 26 shots from the free throw line (76.9%).  Chestnut Hill also dominated on the glass, outrebounding Alliance 38-27.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 when they travel to face Holy Family university for a key divisional conference game.  Tipoff is at 6:00 p.m.
