Griffins Struggle as Tigers Come Away with 64-57 Win

The Chestnut Hill College women's Basketball team struggled in the second half  as Holy Family university completed a season sweep of the Griffins with a 64-57 win at Holy Family's Campus Center in Northeast Philadelphia Tuesday night.

The Griffins fall to 16-9 overall and 11-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  Holy Family improves to 12-3 in league play and 18-8 overall.

Emily Chmiel led the Griffins with her second consecutive double-double, scoring 21 points (7-9 FG, 7-9 FT) and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds.  Morgan Sterner added 11 points (3 3pt. FG) to join Chmiel in double figures.   Leah Miller added eight points and five rebounds.  Avery White had six assists. Chmiel also had two blocks

The Tigers opened the first quarter on fire, scoring the first nine points of the game.  Lauren Crim opened the scoring for the Griffins with a three-point basket and Chmiel followed with two layups to close the deficit to 9-7 as the quarter ended.

Holy Family expanded the lead back to seven before the Griffins went on a 12-4 run, capped by Sterner three-ball to tie the game at 21-21 with 3:35 left in the quarter. White's two free throws with 2:46 left gave the Griffins their first lead at 23-21.  Sterner later added another three-ball to and Siobhan Boylan sank a layup to put the Griffins ahead 28-26 at halftime.

The Griffins opened up an early six-point advantage to start the third quarter, 32-26 before the Tigers exploded with a 22-8 uprising to take a 48-40 lead into the final quarter.   Holy Family shot 64.3% (9-14) in the third quarter while Griffins struggled to find the mark, making just four of 17 shots. The Tigers expanded the lead to 11, 53-42 early in the fourth quarter before the Griffins started to come back, producing a 15-6 run to close the gap to two 59-57 with just under two minutes remaining.  The Tigers would score the final five points to secure the win.

Carolyn Prevost led the Tigers with 23 points and ten rebounds.  Skyler Searfoss scored 14 of her 15 points in the second half to join Prevost in double figures.

For the game the Griffins shot just 36.4% from the field (20-55), despite a stellar 78.6% shooting effort (11-14) from CHC's two post players (Chmiel and Miller).  The Tigers made 24 of 59 shots (40.7%).  Holy Family also outrebounded the Griffins 44-32.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 18, 2023 when they travel to face Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Delaware.  Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
