Abbey Spratt had a career game as the Chestnut Hill college women's Basketball team rebounded from their tough conference loss at Holy Family on Tuesday to defeat Goldey-Beacom college 85-78 Saturday afternoon at the Jones Center in Wilmington, Delaware.
The Griffins improved to 17-9 overall and 12-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Lightning dropped to 10-15 overall and 7-8 in league play.
Spratt led the Griffins with a career-high 17 points, making eight of 12 shots from the field (also career bests). The graduate guard also led the team with four assists.Â
Emily Chmiel also had a solid shooting day, making eight of 12 shots from the field. The sophomore post player also grabbed ten rebounds for her third consecutive double-double and fourth on the season.Â
Morgan Orloski rounded out the Griffins' double figure scorers with 13 points (4-7 3FG).
Leah Miller added seven rebounds on the afternoon, becoming just the fifth player in program history to grab 600 rebounds over the course of their career at Chestnut Hill. Kate Quintus (2003-07) is the Griffins' all-time leader with 865.
Chmiel scored half of her 16 points in the first quarter as the two teams battled to a 25-20 score in favor of the Griffins. The quarter saw six lead changes and two ties. The Lightning jumped out to an 11-4 lead only to see the Griffins erase it with a 14-2 uprising to take a five point lead 18-13 with 3:52 left. GBC rallied to tie the score twice before Chmiel (layup) and Orloski (3-ball) pushed CHC's lead back to five 25-20 as the quarter ended.
Spratt's lone three pointer of the game at the 6:30 mark of the second quarter gave the Griffins their biggest lead of the game at 36-25. The Lightning then went on their own 14-2 spurt to reclaim the lead at 39-38. Layups from Chmiel and Spratt and three-pointer from
Siobhan Boylan completed an 8-0 run and gave Chestnut Hill a 45-39 lead before a late three-point bucket from Goldey-Beacom cut the lead to three 45-42 at the half.
The Lightning tied the game twice in the third quarter the last at 52-52 but back-to-back three-point baskets from
Avery White and Orloski upped the Griffins' lead to 60-52 with just under two minutes remaining.Â
An 8-0 run spanning the final two minutes of the third quarter and first minute of the fourth allowed the Lightning to tie the game one last time at 60-60. Miller's traditional three-point play put the Griffins ahead for good at 63-60. GBC's lead fluctuated between three and seven points until just under two minutes when the hosts closed within two following a pair of free throws, 76-74.Â
Kaitlyn Carter scored all six of her points in the final 1:28 and
Morgan Sterner capped the scoring with a pair of free throws with 13 seconds left.
The two teams shot well from the field with the Lightning making 51% (26-51) of their shots and the Griffins 49.3% (33-67), taking advantage of second chance opportunities with a 15-4 edge on the offensive glass, leading to a 16-5 scoring advantage. Overall CHC outrebounded GBC 40-29. The Griffins committed a season low six turnovers, while the Lightning doubled that number with 12 miscues.
The women's basketball team will play their final road game of the regular season when they travel to New York for a non-conference game against the College of Staten Island on February 21. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
