Emily Chmiel recorded a double-double for the fourth consecutive game, leading three players in double figures as the Chestnut Hill college Women's Basketball team needed overtime to defeat host College of Staten Island, 86-76 at the Tank in Staten Island, New York Tuesday night.
The Griffins improve to 18-9 with the win while the Dolphins fall to 9-18.
Chmiel led the Griffins with a game-high 18 points (6-11 FG, 6-10 FT) and grabbed a season best 14 rebounds, equaling her career high. The sophomore forward also had four blocks and two steals. Joining Chmiel in double figures were the two Morgans (
Morgan Orloski and
Morgan Sterner). Orloski had a near-perfect shooting night, with a 3-3 effort from the field with two three point field goals. Her only miss on the night was at the free throw line as the fifth year guard connected on seven of eight. Sterner added ten points.Â
Abbey Spratt had a game high six assists while Orloski and
Avery White added four apiece. Spratt, the Griffins all-time leader in games played with 112, moves into sole possession of sixth place of CHC's all-time assist list with her six dimes on the night, giving her 242 for her career.
Leah Miller had eight points to go along with seven rebounds. Her seven boards moved her into fourth place on the Griffins' all-time list with 607 for her career, passing current Griffin Assistant coach
Lindsey Alexander who grabbed 603 during her four year career (2009-13).Â
Kaitlyn Carter also contributed eight points while
Lauren Crim registered seven.
The Griffins held a 34-22 lead at halftime and pushed the lead as high as 17 in the third quarter before the Dolphins came storming back with a 22-4 run in the final 4:18 of the period to take a one point lead 50-49.  The lead changed hands 12 times in the fourth quarter and the Griffins found themselves down two with 6.6 seconds remaining. Spratt drove baseline and put up a floater to tie the game at 70-70 with 1.4 seconds, forcing overtime.
It was all Griffins in the overtime period, scoring the first four points before CSI's Gia Esposito (17 points) sank a three-pointer to pull the Dolphins within one, 74-73. Chmiel followed with two straight layups, the last one a put back, triggering a 10-0 run (6-6 FT), putting Chestnut Hill firmly in control 84-73 with under 30 seconds left. After another Dolphin three-ball Orloski sank two more free throws, completing a perfect 10-for-10 free throw shooting effort in the overtime period to round out the scoring. Chmiel was also the defensive catalyst with three blocks and a steal in the extra period.
The ten free throws in overtime completed a season-high 23-for-30 effort from the free throw line. In addition, the Griffins limited CSI to just seven free throw attempts on the night (4-7) never committing more than three fouls in any one period. Chestnut Hill also used their height to their advantage having seven players taller (5'10" and up) than the Dolphins tallest player at 5'9". This led to a 50-34 rebounding advantage with the Griffins getting a rebound on 76% (35 of 46) of the CSI missed shots. Â
Esposito led the Dolphins with 17 points while Jenaylse Alarcon and Amaya Jenkins added 15 and 14 respectively.
The women's basketball team returns home for their final regular season game on Saturday, hosting Georgian Court University. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
