Griffins Rally to Defeat Lions as Chmiel Records another Double-Double

Emily Chmiel recorded her fifth consecutive double-double as the Chestnut Hill college women's basketball team rallied from a seven point fourth quarter deficit to defeat Georgian court University 62-59 in the teams' regular season final Saturday evening at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins won their 19th game as they improve to 19-9 on the season and finished conference play with a 13-4 record.  The lions fall to 10-13 overall and 8-9 in league play.

Prior to the game, the Griffins honored their lone senior on the squad, Lauren Crim.  Crim has served as a team captain since her sophomore year and is one of just 11 players to reach the 1,000 career point milestone.

Chmiel was the lone Griffin in double figures, scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds (10 on the offensive glass) for her fifth consecutive double-double and sixth on the season.  Leah Miller added eight points and eight rebounds while Abbey Spratt and Bri Hewlett had seven points apiece.  Spratt also led the team with six assists.

Trailing by one, 49-48 heading into the fourth quarter, the Lions put together a 9-1 run over the first 4:41 to take a their biggest lead of the game 57-50 with 5:19 remaining.  The Griffins countered with a 12-2 uprising over the final five minutes to retake the lead and later secure the win.  Siobhan Boylan  scored all six of her points in the five minute stretch, including CHC's final bucket that gave the Griffins a three-point lead with ten seconds remaining. The Griffins scored four straight baskets after the Lions took their biggest lead to retake the lead 58-57 following a Spratt layup with 2:29 left.  The Lions' Tian Addison (18 points) put GCU back on top 59-58.  Miller added two free throws with 1:12 left to put the Griffins back on top for good 60-59 with 1:12 left and then held the Lions scoreless the rest of the way.

Chmiel had a big second quarter, scoring 11 of her 19 points and grabbing six rebounds.  She added six more third quarter points along with five offensive boards.

For the game the Griffins shot just 369% 24-65) from the field while GCU made 41.8% of their shots (23-55).  Neither team was prolific beyond the arc (4-13 for GCU, 3-12 for CHC) and the Griffins only outscored the Lions 11-9 from the free throw line while shooting 84.6% (11-13) compared to GCU's 56.3% (9-16).  CHC also committed just seven turnovers in the game.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, February 28, 2023 when they travel to Dominican university of the Quarterfinal round of the CACC Tournament Championship.   The #3 Griffins will face the #2 Chargers at 6 p.m. in Orangeburg, New York.
