Late Surge by Chargers Snaps Griffins Five-Game Win Streak

A late fourth quarter surge by the University of New Haven propelled the Chargers to a 56-49 win over the Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team Thursday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The win by the Chargers snapped the Griffins five game winning streak and dropped CHC's record to 15-8.  New Haven improved to 15-7.

Kaitlyn Carter led the Griffins with 13 points (three 3FG) and grabbed nine rebounds.  Bri Rider added 11 points (30-6 3FG).  Leah Miller had her best rebounding night of the season with 13 rebounds while scoring nine points and adding two blocks.  Abbey Spratt dished out a game high seven assists while also grabbing six rebounds and recording two blocks on the night.

The Griffins led by seven 38-31 heading into the fourth quarter with the Chargers quickly cutting the deficit two one with two three-point baskets in the opening two minutes, 38-37.  CHC still held a 43-40 lead with 4:12 left when the Chargers scored five straight points, capped by a traditional three-point play by their leading scorer Camryn DuBose to take a 45-43 lead with 3:06 left, their first lead of the second half.  Rider's three-ball with 2:18 left put the griffins back up 47-46.  DuBose followed with two more three-balls, the latter from NBA range to give the Chargers the lead for good at 52-47.  UNH made four free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Rider's two three-point baskets in the first three minutes of the third quarter gave the Griffins their largest lead of the game at 34-27.  UNH cut it to five at 34-29 and both teams did not score for the next four minutes.  Two free throws from Lauren Crim and a layup from Carter pushed the lead back to seven heading into the final period.

Debose led all scorers with 17 points, Kameryn King added 16 and Aurora DeShaies chipped in ten points and grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for the victors.

For the game the Griffins made just 28.6% of their shots from the field (18-63) including a 8-for-27 effort from beyond the arc (29.6%).  New Haven on the strength of a 53.6$ shooting effort in the fourth quarter finished the game shooting 39.2% (20-51) from the field which included a 5-for-9 performance (55.6%) from beyond the arc.  Both teams struggled from the free throw line with New Haven making just 50% (11-22) and Chestnut Hill 33.3% (5-15).  CHC outrebounded UNH 47-40 while committing 11 turnovers to the Chargers 13.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 11, 2023 when they host Alliance University in their final CACC divisional crossover game of the season.  Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
