Griffins Win Third Straight, Defeating Battlers 8-5

Ruben Pichardo's sixth inning sacrifice fly broke a 5-5 tie as the Chestnut Hill College baseball team defeated Alderson Broaddus 8-5 at Fleming Stadium in Wilson, North Carolina.

In winning their third straight game, the Griffins improve to 4-9 overall.  The Battlers fall to 6-7.

Mickey Swenson earned his first win of the season, entering the game in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and limiting the Battlers to just one hit in 1.2 innings.  Marlon Rose was lights out in the final two innings striking out four of the seven hitters he faced and allowing only one baserunner (on a hit batsman) to seal the win and earn his second save in as many appearances.

Offensively, the Griffins got big hits from Ahmaad Goldson and Andrew Sawarynski both blasted home runs along with extra base hits from Eli Meredith, David Antone and Lloyd McLaughlin.

The Battlers took a 2-1 lead in the third inning and after starter Kade Breisblatt walked and hit a batter, Chris Urbanik entered and shut the door to any further damage allowing just one hit in 2.1 innings pitched.

Back on offense, Sawarynski tied the game with a solo home run to right field in the third inning and Goldson's three run home run in the bottom of the fifth gave the Griffins a 5-3 lead.

The Battlers battled back to tie the score in the sixth at 5-5.  McLaughlin doubled to lead off the bottom half of the sixth with Zach Ahmed taking his place on the basepaths.  RJ Huth sacrificed Ahmed to third setting the stage for Pichardo who delivered a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to score Ahmed with the go-ahead run.

Justin Geiger added a sacrifice fly RBI in the seventh and later in the inning Antone and Goldson pulled off a double steal with Goldson then scoring on a throwing error from the Battlers catcher, giving the Griffins an 8-5 lead heading into the final two innings as Rose shut the door on AB's offense.

The baseball team concludes their spring trip to North Carolina with a game against Clarion University.  First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
