Zach Jastrzebski's goal with 432 seconds left in the fourth overtime period lifted the Chestnut Hill college Men's Lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over host Molloy University Wednesday afternoon at the Rockville Centre Sports Complex in Rockville Centre, New York.
The Griffins even their record at 2-2 with the win, their second overtime triumph this season. The Lions fall to 4-3. The four-overtime game is also the Griffins' longest game in the history of the program, bettering the Griffins's 7-6 win over Mercy in 2012 when the team scored a goal in the third overtime.
Jastrzebski's goal capped off nearly 16 minutes of scoreless lacrosse and ended the Molloy comeback. The Lions had scored three times in the final nine minutes of regulation to tie the game at 9-9 and send it into the overtime period.
Noah Hammon scored three times and assisted on two other CHC scores for five points on the afternoon while
Cade Johnson and
Will Duddy had two goals apiece. Johnson also had an assist on Hammon's first goal in the first quarter.
Austin Jones had ten saves in earning his second win of the season in net for the Griffins. Faceoff specialist
Zach Schultz collected 12 ground balls, winning 17 of 25 faceoffs in the match. Johnson and
RJ Rybicki had two caused turnovers apiece.
Schultz won every faceoff in the four overtimes giving the Griffins the first opportunity to end the game each time. CHC, however turned the ball over twice and got just one shot on goal total in their four possessions opening each overtime.
The Griffin defense in the overtime was also  stellar, allowing just one shot on goal in the extra time frames.   In the fourth overtime the Lions turned the ball over twice, the last time with just 1:45 left as
Chase Snyder caused the miscue. The Griffin offense worked the ball around and got it back to Jastrzebski who shook off a defender a fired a shot over the left shoulder of Molloy goalkeeper Christian Michaels into the net for the game winner.
Hammon, Johnson and Duddy staked the Griffins to a 4-1 lead with the unanswered goals in the first quarter. Molloy responded with two straight goals before Hammon notched his second score to the give the Griffins a 5-3 lead. Molloy closed to 5-4 by halftime and evened the scored at 6-6 with 5:56 left in the third quarter.Â
The Griffins regained the lead late in the third on a man-up goal by Hammon, his third of the game. Duddy and
Jack Clyne scored goals in the first 3:04 of the fourth quarter, boosting the Griffins leads to 9-6 before Molloy began its comeback to force the overtime, tying the game at 9-9 with just 1:10 left in regulation.
The men's lacrosse team is back in action on Saturday, March 18, 2023 with a game at the University of the District of Columbia. First faceoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
