Baseball Team Drops 16-11 Decision to Kutztown

A slugfest of sorts took place Tuesday afternoon in Kutztown, Pennsylvania as the Chestnut Hill College baseball team and host Kutztown University combined for 27 hits and 27 runs as the Golden Bears earned a 16-11 win.

The Griffins record drops to 1-9 overall while Kutztown improves to 6-4.

Ben Bradt took the loss for the Griffins as Kutztown put up ten runs in the first three innings.  Bradt walked one in his three innings pitched and allowed ten hits.

Justin Geiger and Lloyd McLaughlin had three hits apiece with five other players each recording a hit to give CHC 11 on the afternoon.  McLaughlin also scored three runs while Geiger and Aiden Nesemeier drove in two apiece.

A walk, a double and a two run home run by KU's Mitchell Peers led to a 3-0 lead at the end of one inning.   The Griffins then scored four times in the top of the second to take a 4-3 lead.  McLaughlin singled, stole second and later scored on Nate O'Donnell's single.  After an error produced a second CHC run, RJ Huth hit a sacrifice fly and Nesemeier doubled to give the Griffins a 4-3 lead.

The Golden Bears added three more runs with back-to-back-to back singles in the second inning and four more runs in the third on four hits, including a pair of home runs.

McLaughlin scored on an error in the fifth and Huth scored on a Geiger single in the sixth to close the gap to 10-6.  The Golden Bears then scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to push their lead back up to six, 12-6.

Four more Griffin runs, all while recording just one hit, cut the lead to 12-10 in the seventh.  McLaughlin's single with two runners in scoring position plated David Antone.  O'Donnell was later hit by a pitch to load the bases and Eli Meredith followed with a sacrifice fly to score Ahmaad Goldson who walked earlier.  Huth and Geiger drew walks as McLaughlin scored on the latter and Nesemeier hit into a fielder's choice to score O'Donnell, cutting the lead to two.

The Golden Bears, however, matched the Griffins' four run burst in their at-bat in the seventh inning, expanding their lead to 16-10.  McLaughlin and Ruben Piccardo had back-to-back doubles in the eighth to account for the Griffins' final run.

The baseball team begins their spring trip to North Carolina on Wednesday and will play their first games on Thursday against Alderson-Broaddus University and Clarion University.
