Huth's Sacrifice Fly in Ninth Provides Winning Run for Griffins

RJ Huth's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning lifted the Chestnut Hill College baseball team to a 3-2 win over Alderson-Broaddus University in the team's first game of their four-game spring trip to Wilson, North Carolina Thursday afternoon.

The Griffins improve to 2-9 overall with the win.  The Battlers fall to 5-6.

Huth and Lloyd McLaughlin both drove in runs with sacrifice flies while Andrew Sawarynski also had an RBI on the afternoon.  Eli Meredith reached base all four times he batted with two singles and two walks.

Marlon Rose (2-0) earned the win in relief, pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball after entering the game in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Rose allowed one hit and struck out two.  Jake Schweiker started for the Griffins, pitching 7.2 innings and allowed both AB runs on six hits while striking out ten.

Chestnut Hill struck first when Ahmaad Goldson reached on an error to lead off the second inning, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  McLoughlin then launched a sacrifice fly to bring Goldson home for a 1-0 Griffins lead.

The Battlers tied it up in the bottom of the second when Schweiker was called for a balk with the bases loaded.

The tie was short-lived as the Griffins went ahead again in their next at-bat. Huth was hit by a pitch, stole second and advanced to third on a balk before Sawarynski's infield groundout brought him home for a 2-1 CHC lead.

Schweiker cruised through the next five innings, allowing just three hits and striking out eight Battlers over the five-inning span.  He allowed two singles in the eighth inning before giving up a two-out run scoring double to Stephen Bell to tie the game at 2-2.  Rose entered the game to record the third out.

Aiden Nesemeier singled to start the ninth and was replaced by a pinch runner, Greg Ianelli.  Ianelli was sacrificed to second and after John Crane walked, stole third.  Huth then launched the eventual game winning sacrifice fly to right field as Ianelli tagged up and scored the final run.

Rose got the first two outs in the bottom of the ninth, before giving up a single.  He then struck out Nate Piontka to end the game.

Josh Derocher (0-1) took the loss in relief for the Battlers, pitching the final two innings.

The Griffins will face Clarion University in their second game of the day Thursday afternoon.
