Danielle and
Frances Vassallo combined for ten goals and
Madyson Schwartz added five more as the Chestnut Hill College Women's lacrosse team handily defeated the University of the District of Columbia 17-6 Wednesday evening at Jackson Reed Stadium in Washington, D.C.
The Griffins improved to 2-2 overall while the Firebirds fall to 1-4 on the season.
Danielle Vassallo led the way for the Griffins, recording the second "sock-trick" of her career with six goals on the night, while also adding an assist.Â
Frances Vassallo added four goals and had a game-high six assists for 10 points. Schwartz had five goals and an assist.Â
Rexney Thenor tallied three assists and a goal and
Ashley Watson rounded out the goal scoring with one in the fourth quarter.
Mel Amador had eight saves in between the pipes for the Griffins while
Danielle Vassallo scooped up six ground balls. Schwartz added five ground balls and
Molly Killion had four. Killion also led the way with four caused turnovers.
Schwartz got the Griffins on the board just 31 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal.Â
Frances Vassallo followed with an unassisted score less than a minute later and 30 seconds later fed her sister Danielle for the Griffins' third goal, all within the first 1:56 of the game. Schwartz tallied her second goal at the 11:00 minute mark, making the score 4-1 before the firebirds cut the lead to two with a goal at the 7:03 mark.
Two goals by UDC's Jada Williams (four goals on the night) tied the game at 4-4 with just under ten minutes remaining in the second quarter. Chestnut Hill then scored five straight goals to take a 9-4 lead with 2:40 left in the half with Schwartz scoring the first two,
Frances Vassallo adding two more and
Danielle Vassallo scoring a man-up goal with 4:19 left. Both teams added a goal in the final minutes of the half with
Danielle Vassallo taking a pass from sister Frances with just 44 seconds left to make the score 10-5 heading into the second half.
The Griffins held the Firebirds scoreless in the third quarter while increasing their lead to 12-5 on Schwartz's fifth goal of the game and
Danielle Vassallo's fourth.Â
Frances Vassallo assisted on both scores. CHC's defense also held off the Firebird's late in the quarter when the home team had a three-man advantage due to yellow cards.
 Chestnut Hill added two goals to start the fourth quarter as
Danielle Vassallo notched her fifth score and
Ashley Watson put one in the net for her first score of the game, giving the Griffins a 14-5 lead. Two minutes later and now leading 15-6, Thenor, who had three assists up to this point, tallied her second goal of the season and first of the game at the 10:22 mark. Â
Danielle Vassallo completed the sock trick with an unassisted goal at the 8:04 mark to round out the scoring.
The women's lacrosse team returns to action on Saturday, March 11, 2023 when they host Davis and Elkins College at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill. First draw is set for noon.
