Griffins Outlast Golden Eagles for Second Straight Win

Ahmaad Goldson and David Antone each had three hits, part of a 13-hit outburst as the chestnut Hill college baseball team outlasted Clarion University 13-12 in the second game of the team's four-game spring trip to Wilson, North Carolina.

The Griffins are now 3-9 overall with the win while Clarion falls to 3-9 with the loss.

Rich Bonino picked up the win for the Griffins, pitching one inning of relief  and allowing two runs on two hits.  Marlon Rose, the winning pitcher in the early game this afternoon, picked up his first save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Goldson also drove in three runs and had three stolen bases in the game.  Justin Geiger and Aiden Nesemeier had two RBI apiece, while Geiger and Eli Meredith each recorded two hits.   Meredith also stole two bases.

The Golden Eagles scored a single run in the first to take the early lead.  Walks to Meredith and Andrew Sawarynski set the table for a three-run bottom of the first inning for CHC.  Geiger's sacrifice fly scored Meredith and Goldson followed with an RBI single to score Sawarynski.  Two batters later Lloyd McLaughlin singled to right field to score Goldson for a 3-1 CHC lead.

Both teams scored four times in the second inning as the Griffins took a 7-5 lead.  Goldson had the big hit in the inning, a two-run single with one out.  Afterwards, Goldson stole second and third and scored on Nesemeier's infield groundout.

Antone scored on a double steal attempt that produced a throwing error on the catcher and Sawarynski launched a sacrifice fly to score Nate O'Donnell in the third to increase the Griffins lead to 9-5.

The Golden Eagles chipped away at the 9-5 deficit, scoring twice in the fourth and once in the fifth to pull within one 9-8.  Meredith drove in Antone with a single in the fifth to give CHC a two-run lead 10-8

The two teams exchanged runs in the sixth inning before the Golden Eagles tied the game at 11-11 in the top half of the seventh.  Geiger and Goldson struck again in the seventh with back-to-back two out singles.  Nesemeier then made it three straight singles, driving in Geiger with his poke to left field.  Goldson scored on a wild pitch to give the Griffins a 13-11 lead.

Clarion closed the gap to one, 13-12, with one more run in the eighth before Rose shut the door in the ninth to preserve the win.

The baseball team is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Alderson-Broaddus University for the third game of their four game spring trip.  First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
