A well balanced offense along with solid defense carried the Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team to their fourth straight win, defeating Dominican University 11-2 Friday evening in Hillburn, New York.
The Griffins, now winners of four straight games, improve to 5-2 on the season. The Chargers drop to 2-7 overall. The game was also the Central Atlantic Collegiate conference opener for both teams.
Nine different players scored a goal for the Griffins with
Mike Smith and
Sam Slater scoring two apiece.Â
Jack Clyne had a goal and an assist and
Will Duddy added two assists.Â
Faceoff specialist
Zach Schultz won 13 of 15 faceoffs and scored his second goal in as many games. Schultz also led all players with ten ground balls.
Chase Snyder and
Austin Jones added six ground balls apiece.
Jones was solid in net for the Griffins, recording 15 saves and allowing just two goals, lowering his league leading goals against average to 6.86 per game (which also ranks among the top ten best average in the NCAA).
The Chargers struck first with a goal at the 12:22 mark of the first quarter.Â
Zach Jastrzebski tied the game with an unassisted score with 2:00 minutes left.
Slater and Snyder scored the first two goals of the second quarter to give the Griffins a 3-1 lead and DU's Will Gordon scored with less than a minute remaining in the quarter to make the score 3-2 at halftime.
Five different players scored in the third quarter as the Griffins took a commanding 8-2 lead. Four of the five goals came in the final 3:48 starting with
Nate Matthews' unassisted shot. Chestnut Hill won the faceoff following the score and scored less than 30 seconds later. This process repeated itself for CHC's final goals of the period, win faceoff, hold possession, shoot, score as Slater scored his second goal of the game (2:38) and Smith his first (1:45).Â
Jason Jenkins (unassisted at 13:28) and Clyne (from Duddy at 3:24) were CHC's other scorers in the period.
Schultz won the faceoff to start the fourth quarter and took the ball down the field to score his second goal in as many games, just seven seconds into the fourth quarter, giving the Griffins a 9-2 lead. Smith added his second goal of the game, following the same pattern: win faceoff, maintain possession and score, just 46 seconds later.Â
Noah Hammon scored the Griffins final goal of the game at the 9:43 mark with an assist from
Riley Harker.
The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Thursday, April 6 with a mid-week afternoon matinee game against Felician University. First faceoff set for noon.
