The Chestnut Hill College Women's Lacrosse team scored four goals in a span of 48 seconds late in the first quarter, setting the tone for the rest of the game as they cruised to a 17-2 win over Alliance University Tuesday night in Jersey City, New Jersey.
The Griffins improve to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Alliance drops to 0-12 and 0-6 in league play.
Leading by just one goal 2-1, the floodgates opened as
Danielle Vassallo started a four goal outburst with 1:19 left in the opening quarter, taking a pass from sister Frances for the score and a 3-1 lead.
Danielle Vassallo won the ensuing draw and fed
Madyson Schwartz for the next goal 12 seconds later. Schwartz then caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball near the Alliance net and shot it past AU goalkeeper British Dawson for a 5-1 lead with 37 seconds left.Â
Danielle Vassallo added one more goal six seconds later, again winning the draw and this time taking it herself for the score and a 6-1 lead.
The Vassallo sisters combined for nine goals on the night with Danielle scoring five and Frances four. Schwartz added three while
Rexney Thenor scored twice. Â
Torrin Kelley, Ashley Watson and
Molly Killion also scored for the Griffins.
Killion was also stellar on defense with career highs in caused turnovers (5) and ground balls (9) to go along with her first goal of the season. Thenor and
Danielle Vassallo had three caused turnovers apiece while
Danielle Vassallo added six ground balls and
Frances Vassallo four.Â
Mel Amador made three saves in goal.
Watson, Schwartz and
Frances Vassallo opened the second quarter scoring with unassisted goals to boost the lead to 9-1 before AU's Kristin Bernal scored her second of the game at 4:24 to make the score 9-2.Â
Frances Vassallo, Thenor and
Danielle Vassallo each added an unassisted score before the period ended, sending the game into running time with a 12-2 Griffins advantage.
Chestnut Hill's defense shutout Alliance in the second half as the clock continued to run. Thenor found Kelley open in front of the net for CHC's first goal in the third quarter and
Frances Vassallo added her fourth of the game late in the period.
In the third and fourth quarters, several of the Griffins' defensive players were given attack opportunities to score and Killion took full advantage of that early in the fourth quarter, driving towards the net and putting a shot past the AU keeper at the 13:37 mark for her first goal of the season.Â
Danielle Vassallo scored her fifth goal of the game with just 1:12 left in the game.
For the game, the Griffins outshot Alliance 37-8 (29-5 on goal), were nearly perfect on the clear game, (15-17) and had a season high 37 ground balls to AU's 21.
The Griffins return to action on Saturday, April 15, 2023, when the host Dominican University at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill. First draw is set for 6:00 p.m.
