RJ Huth's two home runs in game two of the Chestnut Hill college Baseball team's doubleheader against Jefferson University went for naught as the Rams rallied from a 5-1 deficit to win the game 9-7 and complete a two game sweep Friday afternoon at Jefferson's Alumni Field in Philadelphia.
Jefferson won the opener 7-6 in ten innings with the winning run scoring on an error.
The Griffins fall to 7-8 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games and 13-21 overall. Jefferson improves to 18-14 overall and 7-4 in league action.
Huth led off the fourth inning with a home run and added a two run shot in the fifth, staking the Griffins to a 5-0 lead. Huth finished the game with four hits, adding a single in the second inning and an RBI double in the seventh, his fourth RBI of the game.
Justin Geiger and
Ruben Pichardo also had three hits apiece.Â
Mike Kiefer suffered the loss, falling to 2-5 on the season, allowing eight runs (only one earned) on six hits while striking out four in 4.2 innings.
Those eight Ram runs all came in the fifth inning: seven of those following a two out error. Diego Santiago hit two home runs in the inning for Jefferson who took an 8-5 lead.
The Rams added another run in the sixth before the Griffins attempted to mount a comeback, scoring twice in their final at-bat. Geiger and Pichardo singled to start the inning and Huth delivered a one-out double to score Geiger. He later moved to third as Pichardo scored on a wild pitch.  Â
Greg Sylvester was then hit by a pitch for the team-leading tenth time this season and then stole second putting the tying runs in scoring position.Â
Aiden Nesemeier then struck out swinging to end the game.
Chestnut Hill scored their first two runs in game two via a triple from
Zach Ahmed who scored on an RBI groundout by
Andrew Sawarynski and an RBI single from Pichardo who drove in Geiger who singled and stole second. Huth's two home runs pushed CHC's lead to 5-0.
In the opener, the Griffins battled back from a 5-2 deficit to tie the game at 5-5 in the fourth inning and take a 6-5 lead in the top half of the ninth, only to have the rams tie the game in the bottom of the ninth and win it, 7-6, on the error in the tenth.
Marlon Rose took the loss, falling to 4-4 on the season after pitching the final 3.1 innings and giving up the tying and game winning runs. Rose struck out three batters and walked five (three intentionally).
Ahmaad Goldson had an RBI double in the first inning, giving the Griffins a 1-0 lead, and Huth scored on a wild pitch in the second inning for a 2-1 CHC advantage. TJU's Marquise Wood hit a home run to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning and an infield error opened the gate for three more Ram runs as the hosts to a 5-2 lead.
Ahmed tripled a scored on Sawarynski's infield groundout in the third and
Nate O'Donnell's two-out infield single in the fourth tied the game at 5-5.
The score remained 5-5 until the top of the ninth when
Eli Meredith was hit by a pitch with the bases load to score Ahmed with the go-ahead run. TJU's Jay Kalieta hit a home run off Rose to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth as the Griffins reliever then pitched out of a bases-loaded jam to send the game into extras.
Two walks from Rose put the winning run in scoring position. Gabe Silva then had an infield hit and an error followed allowing the winning run to score with one out, giving Jefferson a 7-6 win.
The Griffins' baseball team is back in action on Sunday, April 16, 2023, when they host Bloomfield college for a doubleheader at Hostelley field. First pitch is set for noon.
