Five fourth quarter goals carried the Chestnut Hill College Women's Lacrosse team to their first Central Atlantic Collegiate conference victory, defeating Felician University 11-8 Saturday night at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania.
The Griffins are now 4-6 overall and 1-4 in CACC games. The Golden Falcons fall to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Danielle Vassallo scored twice late in the fourth quarter and finished the game with three goals. Her sister,
Frances Vassallo had a pair of goals in the third quarter to give her three tallies on the night as well.Â
Madyson Schwartz had two goals and an assist and
Torrin Kelley scored both of her goals in the Griffins offensive-minded fourth quarter.
Schwartz and
Kaitlyn Carter led the team with three caused turnovers apiece while
Molly Killion added two. Killion, Carter and
Danielle Vassallo had three ground balls apiece. Schwartz, Kelley and
Abigail Galazka had two ground balls each.
Mel Amador had ten saves in goal for the Griffins.
For three quarters, neither team held more than a one goal advantage with the lead changing hands twice, the last on
Danielle Vassallo's man-up goal with 20 seconds left in the third quarter.
Kelley started the scoring in the fourth quarter, causing a turnover on the defensive end and picking up the ground ball and taking it all the way down the field before putting it past the golden Falcon goalkeeper to give the Griffins their first two-goal lead of the night 7-5 at the 13:23 mark. Felician came right back in the next minute to pull within one before Kelley struck with another unassisted goal at the 11:37 mark to again put CHC up by two 8-6.
Playing a man-down Felician's Julia Ravazza scored her third goal to again pull the visitors within one 8-7. The Griffins responded with three unanswered goals to take a commanding four-goal lead.
Rexney Thenor started things off by wrapping around the back of the net and scoring fourth goal of the season to make the score 9-7.Â
Danielle Vassallo followed with a score less than 90 seconds later to push the lead to 10-7 with 6:47 remaining. Twenty-six seconds later after Schwartz won the ensuing draw, Vassallo took a pass from Thenor and found the bottom right corner of the net for an 11-7 lead and complete the hat-trick. Felician added a goal with 16 seconds left to round out the scoring.
Frances Vassallo had started the Griffins offense with a man-up goal with 8:31 left in the first quarter and added another in the second with an assist from Schwartz. She completed the hat-trick with another unassisted goal with just 2:03 left in the third quarter, tying the game at 5-5. She also assisted on Schwartz's goal in the second quarter.
Carter had the assist on Schwartz's second goal early in the third.
The women's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, when they travel to face Lock Haven university for a regional contest. First draw is set for 4:00 p.m.
