Home runs accounted for eight of Bloomsburg University's nine runs as the Huskies defeated the Chestnut Hill college baseball team 9-4 Friday evening at Hostelley Field in north Wales, Pennsylvania.
The Griffins fall to 14-24 overall while the Huskies improve to 19-13.
Ben Bradt took the loss for the Griffins, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing four runs, including the first of BU's four home runs, a three run shot by Wyatt Metzger in the first inning.
Chestnut Hill's Ahmaad Goldson had a two-run home run in the ninth inning while Zach Ahmed went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot with a walk and two stolen bases. Nate O'Donnell and Justin Geiger drove in runs over the course of the game.Â
Griffins' infielder Greg Sylvester was hit by a pitch for the 13th time this season when he took a pitch in the ribs in the eighth inning. The breaks the program's single season record for getting hit by a pitch of 12 set back in 2012 by Joseph Mullin.
Bloomsburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first via the Metzger home run and added a run in the third to lead 4-0 before the Griffins got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. RJ Huth singled and stole second and later scored on a two-out infield hit from O'Donnell.
BU's Antonio Viggiano hit a two run home run in the sixth to give the Huskies a 6-1 lead. Ahmed singled to start the sixth inning, stole second and moved to third on an error and scored as Geiger singled to right field, cutting the deficit to 6-2.
Two more home runs by the Huskies, including Viggiano's second of the game gave the visitors a 9-2 lead as the Griffins came up for their final at-bat. Geiger walked and Goldson followed with a home run to right center field, his seventh of the season, closing the gap to 9-4. The Huskies retired the next three batters to end the game.
The baseball team returns to conference action on Sunday, April 23, 2023, when they host Post University in a Central Atlantic collegiate conference cross-division doubleheader at Hostelley Field. First pitch is set for noon.
