Sixth Inning Rally gives the Griffins Baseball Team their 300th win in Program History

A big six run rally in the sixth inning led the Chestnut Hill College baseball team to a milestone win as they defeated Post University 8-6 in game 2 of their cross-divisional doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Hostelley field in north Wales, Pennsylvania.

The win marked the 300th victory in the history of the Chestnut Hill College baseball program.  The program dates back to the 2008 season.  Head Coach Robert Spratt has been at the helm of the program since its inception.  He recently earned his 400th career win as he coached at Penn State Abington prior to taking the reins of the CHC baseball program.

The come-from-behind win produced a split of the two game series against the first place Eagles.  The Griffins improve to 15-25 overall and 9-10 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  Post falls to 28-14 overall and 18-3 in league contests.

John Crane was the star in both games but more notably in the nightcap.  The junior third baseman belted a two-run home run in the fifth inning and added a two-run double in the six-run sixth inning, giving the Griffins the lead for good.  RJ Huth also drove in two runs in the sixth with a well placed right field single.  Brendan Long and Zach Ahmed also had RBI singles.

Marlon Rose (5-4) was solid in relief, earning his fifth win of the season.  Rose pitched 4.1 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out three.

Trailing 5-2 heading into the sixth inning, the Griffins sent 11 men to the plate against three different Eagles relief pitchers.   CHC loaded the bases with one out against Nathaniel Byrd who was relieved by Jacob Tamburrino.  Tamburrino gave a single to Huth as two runs scored to pull the Griffins within one, 5-4.  He then gave up a double to Crane scoring David Antone (walked) and Huth to put the Griffins in front 8-5.  Shawn Levan walked and a sacrifice bunt by Nate O'Donnell put both men in scoring position.  Ahmed then beat out an infield single scoring Crane and Long delivered a pinch hit single to score Levan and give the Griffins an 8-5 lead and send Tamburrino off the mound.  Justin Geiger, who singled and scored in his first at-bat of the inning, then had a hard groundout to shortstop to end the sixth inning with the Griffins scoring six runs on five hits.

Rose gave up two hits and an unearned run off an infield error in the Eagles final at-bat but induced a groundout from DJ Caron to end the game.

The first game was a home run fest as a total of eight dingers were hit, three from the Griffins and five from Post at the Eagles held on for a 10-7 win.

Crane had a three-run home run in the second inning while Antone and Ahmaad Goldson hit solo home runs in the seventh inning.  For Goldson it was his eighth home run of the season, tying the program's single season record set last year by Andrew Dietz.

Matt Goehrig hit three home runs for the Eagles, driving in four runs while Robert Olah and Carron both hit balls over the fence.

Goehrig pitched 4.1 innings and was the winning pitcher.   Jake Schweiker went six innings to take the loss and fall to 2-2 on the season.  Schweiker struck out six while walking just one but gave up four of the five Post home runs.

Post jumped out to a 4-0 lead after their first at-bat on an Olah two-run single and Goehrig's first home run.  Crane pulled the Griffins right back into the game with a three-run shot in the second.

Olah and Goehrig delivered back-to-back four baggers in the third to make the score 6-3 and Post added another run in the fourth to increase their lead to 7-3.

Geiger had an RBI single in the fifth and pinch runner Greg Ianelli scored on a wild pitch to close the gap to two 7-5.

Caron hit his home run in the sixth, a two-run shot to put post up 9-5 and Goehrig had his third dinger of the game to make the score 10-5 in the seventh.  Antone led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run.  Two batters later Goldson delivered a long home run over the centerfield fence for the Griffins' final run of the game.

The baseball team returns to action with a single game at CACC south division rival Goldey-Beacom College on Tuesday.  First pitch is at 2:00 p.m.
