Seniors Shine as Griffins Defeat Cougars 17-10

Madyson Schwartz scored a career-best six goals as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Lacrosse team defeated Caldwell University 17-10 Saturday afternoon at the Chest Hill college Athletic field on campus.

The Griffins improve to 6-9 overall and 3-6 in Central Athletic Collegiate conference games.  The Cougars fell to 2-11 overall and 1-8 in league play.

Prior to the game the Griffins recognized and honored seven seniors on this year's squad.  Schwartz along with Danielle Vassallo, Frances Vassallo, Mel Amador, Rexney Thenor, Angel Hines and Ashley Watson were honored in a brief ceremony at midfield.

Fourteen of the Griffins' 17 goals were scored by the seniors as Frances Vassallo tallied for scores, Thenor added two and Danielle Vassallo and Watson had one apiece along with Schwartz's six.  Key members of the defense unit accounted for the remaining scores as Molly Killion had the first two-goal game of her career and Kaitlyn Carter added her second of the season.

Amador had 12 saves in goal.  Carter led the team with five ground balls and Killion added three caused turnovers to bring her league leading total to 36.

The Griffins scored three times in the opening five minutes with Schwartz taking a pass from Frances Vassallo for the score at the 12:21 mark for the first goal of the game.  Frances Vassallo scored eight seconds later as Danielle Vassallo won the draw control and quickly found her sister open for the goal.  Killion followed, taking the ball all the way up the field and putting it past the Cougar 'keeper for a 3-0 lead.

Frances Vassallo had her second goal of the game with 5:10 left in the first quarter and Thenor had her first goal with 34 seconds left to give CHC a 5-3 lead after the first quarter.

Danielle Vassallo and Carter opened the second quarter scoring and pushed the lead to 7-3.  Two man-up goals by the cougars followed before Frances Vassallo added her third goal of the game and Schwartz her second to make the score 9-5 at halftime.

Caldwell scored early in the third quarter to close within three 9-6.  Schwartz followed with back-to-back goals, the first on a pass from June Dodson and the second from Danielle Vassallo to make the score 11-6.  Watson got in on the action at the 8:53 mark and Thenor added a man-down goal with 24 seconds left to make the score 13-7.

Killion had her second score of the game just 64 seconds into the fourth quarter. Frances Vassallo had her fourth goal at the 8:15 mark and Schwartz added her final two scores of the game to equal the Griffins highest score of the season with 17.

The women's lacrosse team plays their final game of the season on Saturday, April 29, 2023, hosting Jefferson University at Victory Field at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School.  First draw is set for noon.
