The Chestnut Hill College Women's Tennis team opened conference play against area rival Jefferson University Tuesday afternoon at the CHC Tennis Courts. The Griffins produced a solid effort and defeated the Rams 5-2.
The Griffins improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference matches. The Rams fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
The match opened with doubles competition as the Griffins won two of the three doubles contests to secure the doubles point and take an early 1-0 lead in the match. Wins were recorded by
Elena Arenas Guisasola and
Annika Wise at #2 doubles, defeating Zenia Barretto and Manni Zhang 6-3 and
Alison Isaac and
Nele Haag recording a 6-3 win over Emily Frost and Charly Egger at #3 doubles.
Jefferson tied up the match with Nicole Hrbkova defeating
Lilian Bendel, 6-1, 6-1 at #1 singles. For Bendel, the match was her college singles debut. Haag then put the Griffins ahead 2-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at #3 singles and Isaac followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win at #2 singles, giving the Griffins a 3-1 lead in the match.
Wise then clinched the win for the Griffins, earning a 6-3, 6-3 win over Barretto at #5 singles
. Romi Meirovich than took her match into a 10-point tiebreaker after rallying from one-set down to defeat Rose Huang 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 1-0 (10-6) for Chestnut Hill's final point. Arenas Guisasola also saw her #6 singles match go to a tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets, but the freshman player came out on the losing end of the contest against Stanislava Norets, losing the first set 6-3 and rallying to win the second 7-6 (9-7) before falling 10-7 in the tiebreaker. Norets win at #6 singles made the final score 5-2.
The Chestnut Hill College Women's Tennis team returns to action for their second conference match of the season on Monday, September 25, 2023, when they host Dominican University. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
