Mia Caporellie reached the 2,000-career assist milestone as the Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team opened conference play with a 3-0 win over Goldey-Beacom College at the Jones Center in Wilmington, Delaware.
The Griffins improve to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Lightning fall to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in league games. Chestnut Hill swept the match via scores of 26-24, 25-8 and 28-26.
Caporellie entered the game needing just seven assists to reach the 2,000-assist plateau and quickly reached the mark, recording assists on seven of the Griffins' first 11 points in the opening set. She finished with ten assists in the set and a total of 23 for match, giving her 2,013 for her career. The senior setter joins Kennedy Sutton (2015-2018) as the only two players in program history with 2,000 career assists. Sutton finished her career with a school record 3,522 assists.
Rachel Mace again led the Griffins with ten kills on the night.Â
Erika Dubosky and
Kate Hanley had six and five kills respectively. Caporellie finished with 11 digs to complete her second double-double of the season while also recording five service aces.Â
Cha'kya Johnson added three service aces.
On the defensive side,
Torrin Kelley led all players with 13 digs while Dubosky added 12.Â
Angela April and
Maya Hopson had six blocks apiece.
The first set saw 12 ties and eight lead changes with neither team leading by more than three at any point in the set. Late in the set the Lightning forged a 22-20 lead only to have the Griffins score the next three points with Caporellie recording an ace and Dubosky a kill to take a 23-22 lead. Goldey-Beacom scored the next two points and were serving for the set when their server committed a serving error tying things up again. The Lightning had attack errors on the next two volleys which gave the Griffins the set 26-24.
Caporellie had three aces on the Griffins first four points in the second set as Chestnut Hill jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Dubosky added two more aces and helped push the lead to 12-1 as the team cruised to a 25-8 win.Â
The Lightning led for much of the third set after jumping out to a 4-0 lead and later a 13-10 advantage. Goldey-Beacom led 18-16 when the Griffins again rallied to tie the set again.    Both teams continued to exchanged points until the Griffins pulled ahead 24-23 only to have the Lightning come back and take a 26-25 lead and serving for the set win.   A kill from Mace and an ace from Johnson put the Griffins back in control. The team completed the sweep when the defense forced a lighting attack error to give CHC a 28-26 win in the set.

The Chestnut Hill college women's volleyball team returns to action on Thursday, September 21, 2023 for their home opener when they host Wilmington University at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
