Alejandro Redondo Cybak scored a car high 29 points as the Chestnut Hill college Men's basketball team rallied from a second half deficit to defeat conference and area rival Holy Family University 71-64 in overtime Tuesday night at HFU's Campus Center in Philadelphia.
The Griffins improve to 2-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games and 2-13 overall. The Tigers fall to 1-3 in league play and 5-9 overall.
Cybak connected on 11 of 18 shots from the field and made seven of nine free throws as he poured in his career high 29 points. The sophomore center also grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. Ten of his 29 points were scored during the overtime session.Â
Argel Pettit IV also reached double figures, scoring 19 points.Â
Neal Hill grabbed a career high 14 rebounds and had three assists. Cybak and
Kamal Lee also had three assists to lead Chestnut Hill.
Lee started the rally with just under five minutes to go in regulation that saw the Griffins forge a tie after trailing by five points, 54-49. Lee's three-point field goal started a 7-0 run that gave the Griffins a 56-54 lead with 2:55 left. The Tigers then scored four straight points to retake the lead 58-56. Cybak's putback with 29 seconds left in regulation evened things up again at 58-58 and the Griffins' defense held to force overtime.
The Tigers struck first in the extra frame before Cybak scored six straight points to put the Griffins ahead 64-60. Two HFU free throws cut the lead in half and the Griffins countered with a free throw from
Lucas Dunn and short jumper from Cybak to push the lead to five 67-63 with 37 seconds remaining. Pettit and Cybak then sealed the win with a pair of free throws apiece following a Tiger field goal.Â
Chestnut Hill had an early lead in the opening minutes of the game before the Tigers rallied with a 9-2 run to forge ahead. The Griffins then responded with a 12-4 run to go ahead by six 19-13 and later increased that to their largest lead of the game, seven, 28-21 on a jumper from
Donald-James Imo with 5:41 left. Holy family closed out the half with a 7-2 run to pull within one 30-29 at the break.
Holy Family opened the second half with a 9-4 run to lead by four. CHC later added their own 9-4 spurt to forge ahead by one 45-44 with 9:14 left before the Tigers scored six straight to lead by five for the first time 50-45 with eight minutes left. The tigers still eld by five with 5:18 left when the Griffins began their rally to force overtime.
For the game, the Griffins shot 44.6% (25-56) while the Tigers shot 39% (23-59). Chestnut Hill made two more three point baskets than Holy Family. The Griffins also had a decisive 43-26 rebounding advantage including a 12-4 advantage on the offensive glass (CHC outscored HFU 15-4 in the second chance points category).
The men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 13, 2024, when they travel to take on the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
