Griffins Cruise to Victory over Lions

Five players reached double figures as the Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team won for the fourth time in five games, handily defeating Georgian Court University, 84-53 Tuesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins improve to 5-14 overall and even their record in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games at 4-4.  The Lions drop to 2-16 overall and 0-7 in league play.

Argel Pettit IV led all scorers with 18 points (three 3-point field goals, 7-7 FT).  Donald-James Imo added 16 points (6-9 FG, 3-3 3FG) and also grabbed seven rebounds while Alejandro Redondo Cybak added 12 points (8-11 FT). 

Neal Hill recorded his third consecutive double-double and sixth of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Hill also extended his streak of games with ten or more rebounds to six with Tuesday night's effort.   Noah Charles, seeing his first action after getting injured back in December, came off the bench to score ten points (4-6 FG).

Kamal Lee led all players with five assists while Charles dished out four.  Charles also had three steals on the night.  Imo had three blocked shots while Marshall Baker (8 points) added two.

The Griffins went wire-to-wire with Pettit scoring the first four points and  Chestnut Hill jumping out ot a double digit lead just seven minutes into the game.  Leading 19-8 the Griffins went on a 19-3 run, capped by a four-point play from Pettit to take a 22-point lead with 6:18 remaining.  CHC led by 23, 38-15 following Imo's three-pointer before the Lions closed out the half with a 10-3 spurt to pull within 16 at halftime.

Chestnut Hill upped their shooting game in the second half, making 13 of 21 field goals (61.9%) including a 50% effort from beyond the arc (6-12) as the team continued to increase their lead as the half wore on.  Following a Hill layup with 11:45 left that gave the Griffins a 66-35 lead, the Lions would get no closer than 24 points the rest of the way with CHC closing out the game on an 11-5 run.

Clint Wright, Jr. led the Lions with 14 points.  Anthony Rivera added 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

For the game, the Griffins shot a solid 52% (26-50) from the field and made a season high 12 three-point field goals (12-25, 48%).   Georgian Court did hold a slight 37-34 rebounding advantage, including a 15-7 edge on the offensive glass.  Chestnut Hill committed just eight turnovers.

The men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 27, 2024, when they travel to take on Dominican University in a CACC crossover contest.  Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
