Four players scored in double figures as the Chestnut Hill college women's basketball team extended their winning streak to nine games with an 75-47 win over Georgian Court University Tuesday night at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins improve to 13-5 overall and 7-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games. The Lions fall to 3-13 overall and 3-4 in league play.
Bridie McCann led all scorers with 16 points.Â
Caleigh Edwards and
Avery White added 14 points apiece while
Caraline Herb turned in a perfect shooting night, connecting on all five shots she took from the field for 13 points. (three 3-point baskets, and two 2-point baskets) All ten Griffin players scored in the contest.
Kaitlyn Carter led all players with nine rebounds while also dishing out five assists. Edwards also had five assists on the night to go along with six rebounds.
Bri Rider (7 points) added six rebounds while
Lindsey Lane (6 points) had four.   Lane also led the team with two blocked shots. Herb led the team with three steals while Carter had two.
The Griffins used a dominant second half, outscoring the Lions 47-17 to turn a close game into a blowout. Leading by only eight at the half,38-30, the Griffins took a doub le digit lead just 339 into the period, 48-37 following an Edwards layup. Chestnut Hill closed out the third quarter on a 9-2 run to lead 59-41. Edwards scored nine points in the period while White added six. CHC turned up the defense in the fourth quarter, limiting the Lions to just three field goals while the offense went on a tear, outscoring GCU 26-6 in the period. Â
A 10-0 run to start the period, capped by back-to-back layups from
Sara Tamoun (6 points) and Edwards upped the Griffin lead to 69-41. with 645 remaining. Tamoun added two free throws some 80 seconds later to push the advantage over 30, 74-43 for the first time. After a Lions basket, the Griffins closed ou the game on an 11-2 run for the 38-point win.
Earlier in the game, it was the Lions who were the better team, starting the game with a 14-6 run. Two three-balls from Herb however cut the deficit to four 16-12 with 233 left in the first period with the Griffins cutting the margin to two 20-18 after a pair of McCann free throws with 0.3 left. McCann opened the second quarter with a three-point basket to give Chestnut hill their first lead of the game and added another three-ball a minute later to put the Griffins ahead for good as they closed out the second quarter with a 7-2 run to lead 38-30 at halftime.
Imani Gillette led the lions with 13 points while Marta Guilera chipped in 11 and had a team high five rebounds.
For the game, the Griffins shot 48.4% (31-64) which improved to a 63.6% effort (7-11) from three-point range. The Lions shot 37% (20-54) from the field. Chestnut Hill also held a solid 42-29 rebounding advantage (11-6 on the offensive glass). The Griffins committed just ten turnovers and also put together a nice 19:10 assist turnover ratio.
The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 27, 2024, when they travel to take on Dominican University in a CACC crossover contest. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
