Midshipmen Score Late to Defeat Griffins

A fourth quarter comeback by the Navy sprint football team overcame a 10-7 Chestnut Hill lead as the Midshipmen pulled out a 17-10 win over the Griffins Saturday night at A.A. Garthwaite field in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania.

The Griffins fall to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) south division.  The Midshipman improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in CSFL south division games.

Chestnut Hill jumped out to a 7-0 lead on their first possession of the game as the Griffins drove 70 yards in nine plays for the score.   Griffin quarterback Anthony Cancellare got a big gain off a 26-yard pass to Kyree Griffin before the drive seemingly ended with a Navy interception which was negated by a holding penalty by the Midshipman, giving the Griffins new life on the Navy 18-yard line.  On the first play following the penalty Lawrence Howard V powered  his way through the Navy defensive line for an 18-yard touchdown run.  Brady Reynolds added the extra point for a7-0 Griffin's lead.

The Midshipmen evened the score on their first possession in the second quarter on a Manny Walt two-yard run to cap off a seven-play 70 yard drive.

With score tied at 7-7 the Griffins started their next drive on their own 38 yard line.  After short gains on the ground.  Cancellare again hooked up with Griffin for a 31 yard catch to move the ball to the Navy 12-yard line.  Two plays later a pass interference call on the Midshipmen left the Griffins just three yards out of the end zone before the drive stalled.  Reynolds then kicked a 20-yard field goal to give the Griffins a 10-7 lead, which stood up through halftime.

The scored remained 10-7 until the fourth quarter when Navy's Jacori Sutton kicked a 25 yard field goal with 11:33 left in the game to tie the score at 10-10.  The Griffins failed to get a first down on their next drive and were forced to punt.

Navy quarterback Luke Wagner took control on the ensuing Navy drive, running for 47 of the Midshipmen's 74 yards during the possession including the final 15 for the Navy touchdown, giving the visitors a 17-10 lead with just 5:25 remaining.

The Griffins drove the into Navy territory on their final drive before Cancellare's pass was intercepted at the goal line and brought back to the 20 with 1:13 left where the Midshipmen then ran out the clock.

Cancellare finished the game with 99 yards in the air,  77 of them to Griffin who caught four passes.  He also gained 22 yards on the ground.  Howard ran four 79 yards and Xavier Limehouse added 39.

Wagner led the midshipmen with 130 yards rushing while throwing for 91 yards in the air.

On the defensive side, Jonathan Havrilak recorded a season high 14 tackles while Lex Williams had nine.  Amir Jenkins had an interception while Jake Bosken had the Griffins' only sack of the night.  Miles Coates blocked Sutton's first field goal attempt in the first quarter.

The sprint football team returns to action on Saturday October 19, 2024, when they travel to face Mansfield University. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m
