Caporellie Sets Ace Record but Lightning Snap Griffins Win Streak with 3-2 Victory

Mia Caporellie became the Griffins all-time leader in service aces but the Chestnut Hill college women's volleyball team saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end as Goldey-Beacom edged the Griffins 3-2 Tuesday night at the Jones Center in Wilmington, Delaware.

The Griffins fall to 12-6 overall and 7-3 in Central Atlantic collegiate conference games while the Lightning improve to 10-11 overall and 4-5 in league play.

Caporellie entered the game tied for the all-time lead with Christine Corbo (2002-04) with 182 career service aces.  The senior setter wasted no time in breaking the record, serving an ace on the very first serve of the game.  Caporellie finished with three aces on the evening and now has 185 for her career.

Goldey-Beacom did win that first set 25-21 and the Griffins rallied to even the match with a second set win 25-23.  Chestnut Hill was one point away from winning set three and taking a 2-1 lead but the Lightning rallied with four late points to win set three 27-25.  The Griffins came back and tied the match at 2-2 with a 26-24 win in set #4 before the Lightning pulled away late in the fifth and final set to win 15-12 and take the match with a 3-2 final score.

Erika Dubosky led the Griffins with 18 kills.  The senior outside hitter also recorded 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.  Rachel Mace added ten kills while Maya Hopson and Angela April had nine apiece. Caporellie led all players with 47 assists while also netting 11 digs for her ninth double-double of season.  Dubosky, Pamela Uceta and Caporellie all had three aces on the night.

Alexandra Crespin led the team with 18 digs while Uceta added 11 to join Caporellie and Dubosky in double figures for that defensive stat.  April and Cha'kya Johnson led the team with three blocks apiece. Hopson and Mace record two block each.

For the game, the Griffins recorded 59 kills (55 for GBC) and hit .146 (59-32-185).  The Lightning hit .145 (55-32-159).  CHC had more aces 10-7 while the Lightning recorded more digs (80-62) and team blocks (10-7).  The match saw 39 ties and 15 lead changes over the course of the five-set battle.

The women's volleyball team returns to action on Friday, October 25, 2024, when they travel to face Millersville University for a regional contest.  Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
