Griffins Produce Come-From-Behind Win to Defeat Marauders

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team staged a come-from-behind win Friday evening as they defeated Millersville University 3-2 at MU's Pucillo gym in Millersville, Pennsylvania

The Griffins improve to 13-6 while Millersville falls to 11-11.

Trailing 2-0 after dropping the first two sets, 25-13 and 25-23, the Griffins took the third set 25-22 and led wire-to-wire to even the match at 2-2 with a 25-23 fourth set win.  Chestnut Hill then held off the Marauders in a back-and-forth fifth set, prevailing 16-14 to take the match.

Three players reached double figures for kills, led by Rachel Mace's 15.  Erika Dubosky added 14 kills while Cha'kya Johnson had ten.  Maya Hopson turned in the best hitting percentage for the Griffins with nine kills in 16 attempts all without an error (.562 attack%).  Angela April added eight kills.

Mia Caporellie led all players with a season-high 50 assists while also serving up five aces.  Dubosky had three aces while Mace chipped in two.

On the defensive end, Hopson led the Griffins with four blocks.  Five players recorded double-digit digs in the match with Dubosky topping the list with 18 to notch her ninth double-double of the season.  Caporellie notched her tenth double-double with 15 digs and Mace her ninth double-double with 14 digs.  Alexandra Crespin had 15 digs while Pamela Uceta chipped in 11.

Falling behind 2-0 for only the second time in a match this season, the Griffins began their comeback in the third set where the Marauders held an early lead before the two teams produced four ties , leading to a 12-12 score.  Chestnut Hill then scored three straight points capitalizing on an MU error and getting a kill from April and an ace from Mace to lead 15-12.   Millersville tied the game up twice more before a 5-2 run by CHC produced a 21-18 lead.  Thew Marauders closed within two 24-22 before Johnson drove down a kill to win the set 25-22.

The Griffins led wire-to-wire in the fourth set, opening up an early 8-4 lead.  The lead oscillated between three and five points until late in the match when the Marauders closed within one 22-21  and three rallies later tied the set 23-23.  Dubosky followed with a kill and Crespin an ace to give the griffins a 25-23 lead and even the match at 2-2.

The deciding set saw seven ties and five lead changes over the course of action with Millersville holding the early 4-2 lead only to have the Griffins score four straight points to take a 6-4 advantage.  A bad set by the Marauders gave CHC an 8-6 lead as the teams switched sides of the court.  Following a Millersville timeout, the hosts scored three straight to lead 9-8.  The Griffins countered with four straight points to retake the lead 12-9 with Dubosky capping the run with an ace. Millersville rallied back to tie the score at 14-14 with a 5-2 run.  Mace then delivered back-to-back kills following great sets from Caporellie to give the Griffins a 16-14 win and the match 3-2.

The women's volleyball team returns to action on Sunday, October 27, 2024, when they host Post University at Sorgenti Arena.  Tipoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
