Grififns Win Third Straight Match, Defeating golden Falcons, 3-1

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team completed a perfect 3-0 week Saturday as they defeated Felician University 3-1 in Rutherford, New Jersey.

The win gives the Griffins a 3-2 record in Central Atlantic collegiate Conference games  and an 8-5 mark overall.  The Golden Falcons fall to 5-11 overall and 2-3 in league play.

The two teams split the first two set with the Griffins winning the opener 25-23 and the golden Falcons taking the second set 25-20.   Chestnut Hill went on to win the next two sets, 25-20 and 25-22 to capture the match win.

Maya Hopson led the Griffins with 12 kills while hitting a solid .346 (12-3-26) with only three attack errors.  Cha'Kya Johnson added 11 kills  with only four erros for a .250 (11-4-28) hitting percentage. 

Mia Caporellie led all players with 45 assists and also recorded a pair of service aces.  Angela April also had two service aces.

Alexandra Crespin led all players in the match with 22 digs.   Caporellie added 18 to record her fifth straight double-double and seventh on the season.   Rachel Mace and Erika Dubosky added 14 and 13 digs respectively.   Hopson recorded seven blocks while Johnson added three.

Eleven ties and four lead changes highlighted the first set as both teams battled to win the opening round of the match.  After both teams split the first 20 rallies neither team gained more than a two point advantage until late in the match.  Felician led 18-16 before the Griffins rallied with a 8-2 run to take a 24-20 lead. Three kills from Dubosky highlighted the run.  Felician scored three straight points to pull within one 24-23 before another Dubosky kill clinched the set win,25-23.

The Griffins led 16-11 in the second set when the Golden Falcons embarked on a 7-1 run to take an 18-17 lead.  Hopson's kill tied the score at 18-18 but Felician put together a 7-2 run to close out the set with 25-20 win and even the match at 1-1.

Chestnut Hill jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the third set and never looked back.  The golden Falcons  would get no closer than four points the rest of the way as the Griffins closed out the set winning three of the final five rallies to take a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-20 win.

The Griffins opened up a 19-13 lead in the final set.  Both teams exchanged points over the next eight rallies with Chestnut Hill leading 23-17 following a Golden Falcon timeout.  Felician came back with a 5-1 run to close within two 24-22 before Johnson delivered a kill that gave the Griffins the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

Karla Maldonado and Ashanna Caveness led the Golden Falcons with 12 kills apiece.  Aly Reeser has 21 digs.

The women's volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 when they travel to take on Wilmington University.  Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
