The Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team won their fourth straight game Tuesday night, defeating Wilmington University 3-0 at the WU Athletics Complex in Newark, Delaware.
The Griffins improve to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in central Atlantic Collegiate conference games. The Wildcats fall to 7-9 overall and 4-2 in league play. The win was also the Griffins first on the Wildcats home floor since the 2016 season and the first time in program history that the Griffins swept the Wildcats in a match.
The Griffins rallied to win the first set 26-24 before dominating the next two 25-14 and 25-10.
Four different players recorded six or more kills, with Cha'Kya Johnson and Erika Dubosky leading the way with eight. Rachel Mace added seven kills and Maya Hopson chipped in six.Â
Mia Caporellie led all players with 34 assists while also recording six service aces. Mace and Dubosky recorded four aces apiece as the Griffins put down a season high 18 aces in the match.
On the defensive side, Dubosky led all players with 11 digs. Pamela Uceta added nine while Caporellie chipped in seven.
The opening set saw six ties in the first half of the set before the Griffins took an 11-8 lead following an Angela April ace.   Wilmington followed with seven straight points to lead 15-11 but Chestnut Hill put together a 7-3 run to tie the score again at 18-18. Two Griffin attack errors gave the Wildcats a 20-18 lead and the Wildcats were eventually serving for set point following a Chestnut Hill timeout, 24-23. Mace followed with a kill and an ace to put the Griffins ahead and serving for set point at 25-24. Wilmington had an attack error on the next rally to give the Griffins a 26-24 win.
The Griffins jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second set and never looked back, cruising to a 25-14 win. Chestnut Hill relied on 12 kills from their offense while committing just three attack errors.
Five ties and three lead changes highlighted the early portion of the third set before the Griffins took over, breaking a 7-7 tie with an 18-3 run to put the match to bed with a 25-10 win in the final set. Caporellie had four of the Griffins' nine aces in the set.Â
For the game, the Griffins hit a solid .284 with 36 kills and just 13 attack errors (36-13-81) while the Wildcats hit just .081 (24-17-86). Chestnut Hill dominated the service game with 18 aces to WU's three. The Griffins had 39 digs to Wilmington's 30.
Eliza Schneider led Wilmington with eight kills. Cam Justis had eight assists and Gabrielle Barth recorded nine digs.
The women's volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, October 12, 2024, when they host Caldwell University at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
