Griffins Secure Home Playoff Game but Fall to Tigers in Five Sets.

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Volleyball team dropped their final regular season match of the season to holy Family University 3-2 on Saturday.

Despite the loss, the Griffins clinched the #2 seed and  a home playoff spot for the upcoming Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament which begins on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.  The Women's volleyball team will host Dominican University, the #3 seed from the North Division  at 6:00 p.m.

Chestnut Hill finishes the regular season with a 10-6 conference mark and a 17-9 overall record. 

Kate Hanley led all players with 14 kills while Erika Dubosky added 13 to go along with a team high four service aces.  Her four aces boosted her career total to 185 as she moved into second place on the Griffins all-time list behind teammate Mia Caporellie's 205.

Caporellie led all players with 34 assists and also recorded 17 digs, becoming the eighth player in program history to reach 1,000 digs, crossing the plateau early in the fourth set.

Dubosky led all players with a season-high 19 digs.  Alexandra Crespin added 11 digs. Angela April and Cha'kya Johnson had four blocks apiece while Maya Hopson added three.

Holy Family dominated the first set, jumping out to a 10-5 lead and increasing the lead to 20-11.The Griffins closed within six 22-16 before the Tigers scored the last three points to win the opening set. 

The Griffins used a 6-2 run midway through the second set to take a four point lead 16-12.  Hanley's kill later expanded the lead to 20-14 before the Tigers closed within four 23-19.  Pamela Uceta's kill gave the Griffins set point and CHC won the match on a serving error from the Tigers, 25-21.

The third set saw seven ties and four lead changes as the two teams battled back and forth.  The Griffins broke a 22-22 tie with kills from Dubosky and Hanley only to have the Tigers scored two straight to tie the match again at 24-24.  Another Hanley kill produced set point for the Griffins, but the Tigers scored the next three to win the set 27-25 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Back-to-back aces from Uceta gave the Griffins an early 10-7 lead in the fourth set with the team gradually increasing the margin to five 20-15 before scoring a 25-19 win to even the match at 2-2 and force a decisive fifth set. 

The Tigers took control early, scoring four of the first five points.  Chestnut Hill rallied to tie the score but found themselves trailing by two at the switch point 8-6. The Griffins closed within one three times as the set proceeded before the Tigers scored four of the final five points to take the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.

Shelby Kinzer and Ava Kidd led the Tigers with 13 and 10 digs respectively.  Morgan Steck had 33 assists and four aces.

The Tigers finish their season with a 10-18 record and a 7-9 mark in league play.

The Griffins open their quest for a conference title with a quarterfinal match against Dominican University on Tuesday, November 19.   Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
