The Chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team struggled offensively in the second half as they dropped a 71-50 decision to Adelphi University Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.
The Griffins fall to 2-3 overall while the Panthers improve to 4-2.
IV Pettit led the Griffins with 19 points (5 3FG, 4FT). Noah Charles and Alejandro Redondo Cybak had nine points apiece. Cybak led the Griffins with eight rebounds and two assists. Donald-James Imo and Landon Shivers had three blocks apiece.
The Panthers, after leading by two, scored the first four points of the half to lead by six. Pettit followed with back-to-back three point baskets to tie the score at 40-40 just three minutes in. The Griffins offense then went cold as the Panthers held them to just two free throws and one field goal over the next nine minutes and outscoring the Griffins 24-4 over the stretch to take a 64-44 lead with 8:38 left. The Panther expanded the lead to as many as 23, 71-58 with 1:37 left and the Griffins would come no closer than 18 the rest of the game.
Pettit, Charles and Cybak combined for 27 of the Griffins' 34 first half points as Chestnut Hill erased a four point deficit with a 12-2 run in a three minute span midway through the half to take a six point lead 30-24 with 6:51 left. Pettit's four-point play capped the run. Four straight Adelphi baskets and the Panther reclaimed the lead at 32-30. The Griffins tied the score twice in the final minutes of the half before AU's Tavin Pierre Phillip sank a jumper in the final minute to give the Panthers a 36-34 lead at halftime.
Andres Fulgencio led all scorers with 22 points Dayshaun Walton and Phillip contributed ten points each to the Panther offense. Fulgencio and Al-Fatir Connor had six rebounds apiece.
For the game, the Griffins shot 29.3% (17-58; 6-31 (19.35%) in second half) while the Panthers made 30 of 59 hots (50.8%). Adelphi out-rebounded Chestnut Hill 43-25.
The men's basketball team is back in action on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, when they travel to face West Chester University. Tipoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
