Griffins Cruise to Big Win over Wildcats; Secure Post-Season Berth

The Chestnut Hill College Women's Basketball team won their 11th consecutive game, defeating Wilmington University, sweeping the floor clean with a convincing final score of 80-39 at Sorgenti Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Wednesday night.

The Griffins improved to 15-5 overall and 9-1 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, while also securing a spot in the CACC playoffs. The Wildcats fall to 1-18 overall and 0-9 in the conference. CHC's 11-game winning streak is currently the longest active streak in Division II's East Region.

Caraline Herb led the team with 15 points, with all her field goals made beyond the arc (5-9 FG, three-point field goals). Following right behind in points, Sara Tamoun added 13 (5-7 FG, 3 3FG) and Bridie McCann scored 12 (4-9 FG, 2 3FG).

Caleigh Edwards helped the Griffin's win with her outstanding performance both defensively and offensively. On defense, she had eight defensive rebounds and three steals, while on offense, she had three offensive rebounds (totaling 11), four assists, and nine points. Emily Sekerak also played a major role on the Griffins' defense with her five defensive rebounds and four blocks. Tamoun also had five defensive rebounds. Avery White led the team with six assists.

The Griffins took the lead quickly, with Sekerak's (nine points) game-opening layup and did not come close to losing it then after. The next five points came from McCann, making it a 7-0 lead at 7:15 in the 1st quarter, finishing the quarter with a 22-8 lead.

In the second quarter, the Griffin's took a large leap with two of Herb's three pointers, White's five points and one assist, and Edwards' one assist, one defensive rebound, one steal, and two points to lead 42-20 at halftime.

The third quarter ended with the Griffins' adding 16 more to the board while allowing 14 points for the Wildcats; however, they (Wilmington) still did not come close to the Griffins' 24 point lead.

Chestnut Hill finished with a 41-point lead, scoring 22 points in the fourth quarter while turning on the defense, giving up just five points.

There were zero lead changes nor ties, as the Griffin's led wire-to-wire with the help of their bench scoring 41 points.

Chestnut Hill had only seven rebounds more than Wilmington (48-41), only committed five fewer turnovers (16-21) but only had five in the final twenty minutes of action. The Griffins' defense held the Wildcats to 21.5% shooting from the field, the tenth time over the course of their 11-game win streak that they have held an opponent under 35% shooting and the seventh time this season that the team has held an opponent under 30% shooting for a game.

The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 3, 2024, when they host Post University in a CACC contest. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
