Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Eagles Use fourth Quarter Rally to Snap Griffins' 11-Game Win Streak

A fourth quarter rally by Post University led the Eagles to a 62-56 win over the Chestnut Hill College Women's basketball team Saturday afternoon, snapping the Griffins' 11-game win streak.

The loss was the Griffins' first countable loss since falling 53-51 to Kutztown University on December 9. (CHC also had an exhibition loss to division I Binghamton University during the streak, but that game did not count on their won/loss record).  The Griffins fall to 15-6 overall and 9-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Eagles improve to 12-7 overall and 7-2 in league play.

Bridie McCann led all scorers with 19 points and was the lone Griffins player to reach double figures.  Emily Sekerak added eight points and had a team high six rebounds.  Avery White had seven points and led all players with six assists.

Chestnut Hill had built a double-digit lead in the first half and expanded it to a game-high 15 points, 40-25 with 6:17 left in the third quarter when the Eagles began to rally.  Post closed the quarter on a 13-3 run to pull within five entering the final ten minutes of action.

Post's Tijanae Simmons (18 points, six 3 pt. FG) hit two three-point baskets in the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter  and Tiffany Bravo (10 points) added a basket to give the eagles their first lead of the game 46-45 with 7:18 remaining.  Another three ball from Simmons put the Eagles back up by four as the Griffins were forced to play from behind in the fourth quarter for the first time since their January 9th game against Holy Family (seven games ago).

Caliegh Edwards sank two free throws and Sara Tamoun made a three-point basket capping a 5-0 run to give the Griffins the lead again at 50-49 with 4:20 left.  Both teams exchanged baskets over the next three minutes with the Griffins leading 54-53 with 1:02 remaining.  The eagles then went to the free throw line, converting seven of eight shots in the final minute while the Griffins were unable to put the ball in the basket, producing just two points on free throws as the Eagles pulled away with the six point win.

The Griffins shot just 30.3% from the field for the game (and just 24.5% over the final three quarters).  Post shot 37.5% for the game (63.6% in the final quarter).  The Eagles held a 44-36 rebounding edge while the Griffins committed nine fewer turnovers (14-23).

The women's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, for their penultimate regular season road contest, taking on area rival Jefferson University.  Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
