Griffins Fall to Lightning, 81-74

 
A big run by Goldey-Beacom College in the latter part of the second half offset four Chestnut Hill players scoring in double figures as the Lightning completed a season sweep of the Griffins with an 81-74 win Tuesday night at Sorgenti Arena.

The Griffins fall to 7-19 overall with the loss and 6-8 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Lightning improve to 10-4 in league play and 15-11 overall.

Neal Hill led the Griffins, recording his seventh double-double of the season with 18 points (8-10 FG) and 11 rebounds.  Alejandro Redondo Cybak also recorded his seventh double-double of the 2023-24 campaign with 16 points and 12 rebounds.  Marshall Baker came off the bench to score 12 points while Argel Pettit IV added 11 points.  Noah Charles led the team with seven assists.

Chestnut hill trailed by three at halftime 32-29 with the Lightning increasing the lead to nine 48-39 in the first five minutes.  The Griffins followed with a 13-3 run to take their first lead since scoring the first basket of the game, 52-51 midway through the half.

The lightning countered with a 17-6 run over the next 5:35 to take control of the contest 68-58 with 4:33 left.  GBC increased their lead to 13, 73-60 with 2:30 left.  Chestnut Hill chipped away at the lead but would come no closer than six as the Lightning hung on for the seven-point win.

For the game, the Griffins shot 38.6% (27-70) from the field while the Lightning made two fewer field goals but had a much more efficient shooting effort, making 25 of 51 shots (49%).  The Lightning did outscore the Griffins 25-11 on the free throw line, making 25-31 (80.6%) from the charity stripe while the Griffins made just 11 of 15 (73.3%)

The men's basketball team will play their final home game of the 2023-24 season against holy Family University on Saturday, February 24, 2024.  The winner of the game will have the upper hand in securing the final south division playoff spot in the upcoming CACC Tournament. The Griffins will also be honoring their senior players prior to the game.  Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
