Griffins Record Big Win over CACC North Leader Post University

A dominant second half by the Chestnut Hill College men's basketball team gave the Griffins a 74-66 win over CACC North Division leader Post University Saturday afternoon at Sorgenti Arena.
The win was the Griffins' first against the Eagles in their last seven seasons (2016) and their first vs. Post at home since the 2011-2012 season.  Chestnut Hill improves to 7-15 overall and 6-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  Post, who was also ranked #3 in the East Region in the D2CSC Regional media poll, falls to 14-5 overall and 5-3 in league play.

Argel Pettit IV led the Griffins with 25 points (6-10 FG, 5-6 3FG, 8-8 FT) while Alejandro Redondo Cybak added 18. (14 in the second half).  Noah Charles added 12 points.
Neal Hill led all players with 11 rebounds while Cybak added seven and Charles six.  Charles also led all players with five assists and three steals.  Cybak blocked three shots to lead all players.

Deng Deang scored 34 of Post's 66 points and led all players.

Leading by just a point, 40-39 at halftime after the Eagles battled back from an eight point deficit in the final 2:23 of the first half, The Griffins gave up an early basket to give the Eagles a slim 41-40 lead.  Hill followed with a free throw to tie the game and start a 16-3 uprising that saw the Griffins take a 56-44 lead with 11:50 left in the game.  Cybak had seven of the 16 points including a traditional three-point play to cap the run. 

The Eagles slowly chipped away at the lead and cut the margin to seven 61-54 with 7:22 left before the Griffins again built the lead back to double figures.  Cybak had two straight baskets and Pettit made two straight free throws to give CHC a 13-point lead, 67-54 with 3:30 left.  Post followed with an 8-1 run to make it a two-possession game 68-62 with just under a minute left. 

Chestnut Hill closed out the game making 6-of-6 free throws to seal an eight point win.

Both teams shot 42.9% from the field (CHC 21-49, Post 27-63).  Where the Griffins held a big advantage was at the free throw line, making 24 of 27 free throws (88.9%) while Post made just five of 13 (38.5%).  CHC also had a slight rebounding advantage 37-32 and made the most of their ten offensive rebounds, scoring 17 second chance points (Post scored nine).  The Eagles reversed that number in the points off turnovers categories, outscoring the Griffins 17-5 (15 CHC turnovers, 11 for Post).

The men's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, for their penultimate regular season road contest, taking on area rival Jefferson University.  Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
