The Chestnut Hill college women's Basketball team led for most of the first three quarters before a huge fourth quarter rally from Jefferson University propelled the Rams to a 72-61 win.
The Griffins fall to 15-7 overall and 9-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games. Jefferson improves to 20-1 overall and 10-0 in league play.
Sara Tamoun scored a career-high 17 points (6-10 FG, three three-point FG) to lead the Griffins.
Bridie McCann also had three three-point baskets and finished the game with 15 points.
Kaitlyn Carter had six rebounds to lead Chestnut Hill while
Avery White and led the team with five assists and three steals.
McCann hit all three of her three-point baskets in the third quarter as Chestnut hill maintained their lead from the first half 48-40 before the Rams began their comeback.
Jefferson started the fourth quarter on an 15-1 run to take their first lead since the first quarter 55-49 with 5:33 left. McCann's basket broke the run shortly thereafter but the Griffins struggled to make shots, finishing the quarter with just four field goals, including two three-point baskets from
Caraline Herb, but the Rams outscored the Griffins, 17-12 over the final five minutes to pull away with the victory.
Earlier in the game, Chestnut Hill scored the first seven points of the second quarter, completing a 21-2 run to take a 15-point lead 31-16 before the Rams battled back with a 12-2 run to pull within three 33-30. The Griffins scored the final four points of the period to lead 37-30 at halftime.
A back and forth first quarter saw five leads and four ties before the Griffins scored 12 straight points, fueled by Tamoun's eight points of the bench to task a 24-16 lead after the first quarter.
For the game, the Griffins shot 41.1% from the field (23-56) while the rams finished the game shooting 43.1% (28-65). Jefferson held a 39-33 rebounding advantage and also took advantage of 22 CHC turnovers, scoring 22 points off the Griffins' miscues.
The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 17, 2024 when they host Bloomfield College at Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
