Griffins Drop Two on First Day of Wilson Tobs College Classic

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team opened competition at the Wilson Tobs College Classic #2 Friday morning with a narrow 3-2 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan at Fleming Stadium in Wilson, North Carolina.

The Griffins took on the College of Saint Rose in their second game of the day, falling to the golden Knights 6-0.

Chestnut Hill's record now falls to 0-6.

In the opener, Jake Schweiker (0-2) pitched six innings, allowing all three runs on four hits while striking out five to take the loss.  Calvin McCall had two of the Griffins' five hits.

McCall led off the bottom half of the second inning with a double to right center and advanced to third on Justin Geiger's infield groundout to the first baseman.  Aiden Myers then delivered a single to left field to score McCall and give Chestnut Hill a 1-0 lead.

Geiger singled to start the fourth inning and advanced as Ahmaad Goldson drew a walk and Dan Ciotti was hit by a pitch.  Two batters later Geiger scored following a wild pitch from Bobcats pitcher Alex Hernandez to make the score 2-0.

Schweiker gave up a two run single in the fifth inning and a solo home run by Matt Turner in the sixth as the Bobcats took a 3-2 lead.

The Griffins put the tying run on base in the eighth and ninth innings, with Chestnut Hill loading the bases in the eighth on three walks and a single and two stolen bases from McCall in the ninth.  In both instances, Chestnut Hill was unable to get the run across as the bobcats hung on for the win.

Against the Golden Knights, Rich Bonino (0-2) gave up five runs (four earned) and seven hits in five innings of work while striking out three as the Griffins lost 6-0.

Chestnut Hill managed two hits in the contest, a single by Michael Pascoe in the sixth and another single from Christian Peluso in the ninth inning.

Bonino gave up single runs in each of the first three innings and two more in the fifth highlighted by a solo home run by Vince Venditti.  Nathan Toms homered in the eighth of CHC reliever Marlon Rose to make the final score 6-0.

Chase Tucker earned the win for the Golden Knights pitching seven innings and striking out ten.

The men's baseball team will face these two teams again on Saturday, March 2, 2024, taking on the bobcats at 1 p.m. and the golden Knights at 4 p.m.
