Strong pitching, timely hitting and solid baserunning led the Chestnut Hill College baseball team to their first two wins of the season Saturday afternoon as they concluded their four-game set at the Wilson Tobs College Classic in Wilson, North Carolina with wins of West Virginia Wesleyan, 9-4 and College of Saint Rose, 12-3.
The Griffins improve to 2-6 on the season.
Griffin starters
Ben Bradt and
Dylan Broderick earned the wins in their respective games. Bradt pitched five innings in the opener against West Virginia Wesleyan allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three. Broderick pitched six innings in game 2 against St. Rose, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out seven.
Colby Seelig earned his first save of the season with four innings of relief in the opener, striking out six while allowing two runs on two hits.
Marlon Rose also recorded his first save with three innings pitched against St. rose, allowing one run on three hits.
In the opener,
Michael Pascoe had three hits while
Phoenix Bowman and
Christian Peluso had two apiece. Bowman also had two RBI.
Justin Geiger tied a school record with five stolen bases as the Griffins as a team recorded 12 for the game, also tying a school record. Pascoe had four steals in the game.
Pascoe also drove in four runs in game two while
Andrew Sawarynski had two RBI via a two-run home run. Eight different griffins had at least one hit, with Sawarynski getting two.
RJ Huth and
Calvin McCall stole three bases apiece.
Chestnut Hill put up three runs in the second inning against the Bobcats in the opener, breaking a 1-1 tie and taking the lead for good, 4-1. Bowman had an RBI single to bring home the first CHC run. Huth was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Bowman with the second run and
Aiden Myers had a sacrifice fly to bring home Peluso.
Geiger walked and stole two bases before scoring on Bowman's sacrifice fly to give CHC a 5-1 lead in the third inning. Luke Burner hit a home run for the Bobcats in the bottom of the third to make the score 5-2.
The Griffins added two more runs in the fifth and another in the sixth on a Pascoe steal of home, making thew score 8-2. A double steal with Geiger swiping second and McCall swiping home brought in the Griffins final run in the eight. Seelig retired the Bobcats in order in the ninth to secure the 9-4 win.
Against St. Rose, the Griffins scored four runs in the second inning to break a 1-1 tie and take control of the game. A bases loaded walk to Myers, a bases load wild pitch and a two out two-RBI single by Pascoe brought home the final runs in the inning and giving CHC a 5-1 lead.
Sawarynski's two-run home run in the third upped the Griffin lead to 7-1 and two more sacrifice flies in the fourth inning gave the Griffins a 9-1 lead.
Dan Ciotti had an RBI single in the fifth for a 10-1 lead.
Pascoe's second sacrifice fly on the game in the sixth inning brought home the Griffins' 11
th run. The Golden Knights added solo runs in the sixth and seventh to make the score 11-3. Peluso scored on Huth's RBI double to round out the scoring.
The baseball team returns to action for their home opener at Hostelley Stadium on March 5, 2024, when they play Bloomsburg University in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
