Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Killion and Sullivan Combine for nine goals but Griffins Fall Short vs. Cougars

Molly Killion scored six goals and Lauren Sullivan had her first career hat-trick but a late rally by the Chestnut Hill College Women's Lacrosse team fell just short as Caldwell University defeated the Griffins 12-10 Tuesday night at Victory Field in Lafayette Hill, Pa.

The Griffins fall to 1-3 on the season while the Cougars even their record at 1-1.

Five of Killion's career-high six goals came in the second half with three of them in the fourth period alone.  Four of her six goals were also man-up scores.   Two of Sullivan's three goals were also man up goals.  Nicole George also scored for the Griffins.

Anna Sanverdine had three caused turnovers while Killion added two. Riley Regan led the team with seven ground balls with Killion scooping up five.

Sullivan put the Griffins on the board early in the first quarter, taking a pass from Regan to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead just 2:12 into the game.  The Cougars however scored five unanswered goals before the period ended to take a 5-1 lead.

Killion had her first goal of the night just 59 seconds into the second quarter to make the score 5-2 and George took a pass from Allyson Smith at the 8:04 mark and put it past CU goalkeeper Serena Berra to make the score 6-3.  Sullivan had a man-up goal at the 4:44 mark of the second to pull the Griffins within two 6-4 before the Cougars scored the final two goals of the quarter to lead 8-4 at the half.

Two early second half goals by Caldwell increased their lead to 10-4 before the Griffins started chipping away. Killion scored two man-up goals in a span of 1:18 with Sullivan assisting on the second one to close the gap to 10-6 as the two teams headed into the fourth quarter.

A free-position goal from Killion at the 9:19 mark made the score 10-7 before the Cougars responded with their fifth free-position goal of the night to make the score 11-7.   A Caldwell unreleaseable yellow card set the stage for an impressive three goal outburst in 71 seconds. Killion started it of taking a pass from Anna Sanverdine just inside the offensive zone and drove in for the first score with 3:26 left.  She then fed Sullivan for her third goal of the game less than a minute later and scored on a free-position shot just 22 seconds after Sullivan's score to pull CHC within one 11-10.

Caldwell won the ensuing draw control and took the ball right in for a score with 1:54 left.  The Griffins had possession following a Caldwell turnover and had two shots at the net in the final 90 seconds but both sailed wide and the Cougars hung on for the two-goal win.

Tiana Cipot and Tala Marzooq had four goals apiece to lead the Cougars.  Berra had 12 saves in net.

The Griffins outshot the Cougars 30-20 with a 22-15 shots on goal advantage.

The Women's Lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 when they begin conference play with a game against Wilmington University.  First draw is set for 7:00 p.m. at Victory Field.
