Ten different players scored goals as the Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team began conference play with a dominant 15-4 win over Dominican University Saturday afternoon at victory field in Lafayette Hill.
The Griffins improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Chargers Fall to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in league play. Chestnut Hill has now won 14 straight matches against the Chargers dating back to 2012.
Noah Hammon again led the griffins offensive attack, scoring three goals, all in the first quarter while also adding two assists for five total points.Â
Nate Matthews had two goals and added an assist for three points while
Austin Derx and
Tommy Austin had two goals apiece.Â
Will Duddy and
Jake Ballerini had a goal and two assists apiece to total three points each.Â
Cade Johnson, Sam Slater, Cooper Jackson and
Jayden Basalatan also scored. Basalatan's goal was the first of his collegiate career.
Chase Snyder led Chestnut Hill with four ground balls with nine other players recording at least two on the afternoon.Â
Kyle Gartenmayer had three caused turnovers to pace the Griffins defense.Â
Julius Sorino picked up the win in net, allowing two goals and recording five saves.
Eight unanswered goals in the first half staked the Griffins to a 9-1 lead at halftime. Hammon had the first score of the game at the 11:19 mark off a pass from Matthews and the Chargers evened the score just 11 seconds later off the faceoff before the Griffins began their scoring onslaught.
The Griffins scored five more times in the first quarter with Hammon netting two of them, including an unassisted man-up goal with 4:25 left. He also assisted on Duddy's man-up goal at the 8:43 mark. Matthews and Slater scored the other two goals in the quarter with Ballerini assisting on both.
Austin, Jackson and Derx all scored in the second quarter with Derx' goal coming with the Griffins playing a man-up, staking the griffins to a 9-1 lead.
Ballerini had an unassisted goal just 65 seconds into the third quarter to put the Griffins up 10-1 before the Chargers James Conklin scored shortly thereafter following a
scramble in front of the net to make the score 10-2. Basalatan delivered his first collegiate score, unassisted at the 9:47 mark driving the ball past Charger goalkeeper Bryce Layton from about 15 yards out. Austin and Matthews both tallied their second goals of the game in the third quarter with Johnson adding a goal with 1:16 left to put the Griffins up 14-2. As the quarter was ending a pass from a Dominican player bounced off a Griffins' player and into the net giving the Chargers their third goal of the game. Â
Derx scored his second man-up goal of the game just 47 seconds into the final quarter. DU's Eric Greenwood added a man-up goal with five minutes left to round out the scoring.
For the game, the Griffins outshot the Chargers 38-29 (27-14 on goal) and held a 32-26 advantage in ground balls. CHC scored on four of seven man-up opportunities while the Griffin defense held the Chargers to just one man-up score in five attempts.
The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, hosting the University of the district of Columbia at victory field. Â The game is set to start at 7 p.m.Â
