Griffins Sweep a Doubleheader from Dolphins

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team swept a doubleheader for the first time this season, scoring 12 runs in both games as the defeated the College of Staten Island 12-5 and 12-2 at the CSI Baseball complex in Staten Island, New York Saturday afternoon.

The Griffins improve to 6-9 with the sweep while the Dolphins fall to 5-10.

In the opener, Phoenix Bowman drove in three runs while John Crane, Michael Pascoe and Justin Geiger had two hits apiece, accounting for six of the Griffins' nine hits.  Rich Bonino earned his first win of the season, tossing five innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out two.

Bowman staked the Griffins to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a one out bases- loaded single through the right side, scoring Aiden Myers (single) and Pascoe (walk). The Dolphins got one back in the bottom of the first and tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the second.

Chestnut Hill scored three times in the third, highlighted by Crane's two-out two-run double to centerfield to take a 5-2 lead.   Two unearned runs in the fourth pushed the Griffins lead to 7-2.

The Griffins exploded for five runs in the sixth inning with Pascoe driving in two with a long one-out single to left field and Geiger plating the third run of the inning also via a single to left field.  Bowman's sacrifice fly scored Pascoe as Geiger remained at second after stealing the base.  With Christian Peluso batting, Geiger stole third, his second steal of the inning and scored on a throwing error by the CSI catcher completing the five run onslaught and giving CHC a 12-2 lead.

Staten Island scored three times in their final at-bat to make the final score 12-5.

Bowman also starred in the second game, recording two hits and driving in three runs to give him six RBI in the two games. He also had three of the Griffins' ten stolen bases.  RJ Huth also had two hits.  The Griffins also took advantage of the CSI pitching wildness, as the team drew 15 walks in the game, one shy of the school record set in 2018 against Lincoln.

Dylan Broderick was solid on the mound, earning his second win of the season (2-1).  The freshman hurler pitched six innings, allowing just one run on two hits while striking out nine.

Chestnut Hill scored solo runs in each of the first two innings all without the benefit of a hit.  Pascoe scored R.J. Huth (walk) with an infield groundout in the first and Myers brought home Bobby Sabatino with a sacrifice fly to stake the Griffins to a 2-0 lead.

Now leading 2-1 entering the fourth inning, the Griffins blew the game open with five runs on five hits to take a 7-1 lead.  Myers started the scoring with an Rbi single, scoring Huth (single, stolen base).  Geiger singled to load the bases and bowman followed with a single to score two more runs.  Geiger scored on a throwing error following a steal of third and Sabatino singled to score bowman with CHC's seventh run.

Another five run inning put the icing on the cake for the Griffins in their final at-bat.  Shawn LeVan started things off with a double to score Huth and later scored on a wild pitch.  Three batters later, Bowman had his third RBI of the game and Alexander Fascia followed with an RBI single.  Bowman later scored the final Chestnut Hill run when Wyatt Spinks hit into a fielder's choice.

The Dolphins scored one more run in their final at-bat to round out the scoring.

The baseball team is back in action on Sunday, hosting Lincoln University at Hostelley field for a doubleheader.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
