Alejandro Redondo Cybak made all nine of his shots from the field as he led the chestnut Hill College Men's Basketball team to a 66-51 win over Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center in Lakewood, New Jersey.
The Griffins improve to 9-19 overall and finish conference play with an 8-8 record. Chestnut Hill finishes fourth in their division and will for the quarterfinal round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament.
The men's basketball team, as the #4 seed in the CACC South Division will travel to play #1 seed and CACC North Division champion Bloomfield College on Tuesday, March 5 at 6:00 p.m. in Bloomfield, New Jersey.
Cybak finished the game with 19 points while also grabbing 12 rebounds to record his seventh double-double of the season. He also joins David Goode as the only players to make at least eight field goals in a game without a miss. Goode went 13-for-13 vs. Delaware Valley in January 2007.
Joining Cybak in double figures were the backcourt duo of
IV Pettit and
Kamal Lee. Pettit scored 16 points while Lee added 11. Cybak also had two blocks on the afternoon.
Neal Hill led all rebounders with 14 to go along with nine points. Hill had recorded double digit rebound efforts in five straight games and 14 of the last 16. Hill also led the team with six assists. He extends his school record single season total to 288 and continues to lead the CACC, averaging 10.3 rebounds/game.
Chestnut Hill found themselves trailing early in the game and were down by two 22-20 with 4:12 left in the half when they ran off ten straight points (two three-pointers from Lee and two layups from Cybak) to take an eight point lead 30-22. Both teams exchanged baskets in the final minute as the Griffins held a 32-24 lead at the half.
Georgian Court opened the second half with a 7-1 run to close within two 33-31 before the Griffins followed with nine straight points to take a double digit lead 44-33 with 12:41 remaining. The Lions hung around however and cut Chestnut Hill's lead to six on three occasions, the last with 5:08 left, 53-47. Pettit and Cybak quickly put Chestnut Hill back up by double digits with Pettit sinking a three-ball and Cybak adding two more layups. Hill later added a three-pointer to complete an 11-0 run and give CHC their biggest lead of the game at 64-47 with 1:41 left.Â
Lucas Dunn, who saw his first action in six weeks following an injury, scored the Griffins final points of the game.
For the game, the Griffins shot 42.9% (24-56) from the field while the Lions made just 38% (19-50) of their shots. GCU was more efficient at the free throw line (87.5% to CHC's 64.7%) but also had nine fewer attempts (17-8). CHC also held a 41-25 rebound advantage.
Chestnut Hill returns to action for their CACC quarterfinal game on Tuesday, March 5.
