Three Home Runs not Enough as Baseball Drops a one-Run contest to Open Conference Play

Senior John Crane hit two home runs and freshman Michael Pascoe hit his second in as many games, but the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team could not hold onto a five-run lead as the Holy Family University Tigers rallied to defeat the Griffins 12-11 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener for both teams at Hostelley Field in North Wales.

The Griffins fall to 6-12 overall and 0-1 in league contests.  The Tigers improve to 9-11 and 1-0 in league play.

Crane blasted a two-run home run in the second inning and added another two-run shot in the third to give the Griffins a 5-4 lead at the time. Crane become just the 12th player in the 17-year history of the program to hit two -home runs in one game.

Pascoe, who hit a two-run home run in Sunday's game two loss to Lincoln, broke a 9-9 tie with a blast over the left centerfield wall in the seventh inning.  The freshman first baseman finished the game with four hits, three RBI and two runs scored.

Aiden Myers added two hits and stolen base while Dan Ciotti was hit by a pitch three times, breaking the school's single game record for getting hit with a pitch.  Ciotti also stole three bases.

Marlon Rose took the loss for the Griffins, allowing three on one hit with two walks and four hit batters in two innings of relief work.

The Tigers opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning before Crane's first home run tied the game at 2-2.  Holy Family broke the tie with two runs in the top half of the third before the Griffins struck again in their half of the inning.  Phoenix Bowman plated Justin Geiger via a sacrifice fly to cut the Tigers lead to 4-3 before Crane belted his second two-run home run of the game as the Griffins went ahead 5-4.

RBI singles from RJ Huth and Pascoe added two more run in the fourth.  A sacrifice fly from Geiger and an infield groundout from Peluso increased the Griffins lead to 9-4.
Holy Family put together five hits and scored five times in the seventh inning to tie the game at 9-9.  Dalton Turner capped the tiger rally with a three-run home run off reliever Colby Seelig.  Pascoe broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh with his home run.

In the Tigers final at-bat, an infield error and a one-out walk by Rose put two runners on base.  Rose then hit the next two batters as the lead runner scored to give the Tigers a 12-11 lead.   Pascoe had a two-out single in the ninth but could not score as the Tigers hung on for the win.

The baseball team will be back in action on Friday, March 22, 2024, when they face Holy Family in a conference doubleheader.  The games were originally scheduled for Saturday, March 23 at the Ramp Athletic Complex, where the Tigers play their home games but was moved to Friday at Hostelley Field to avoid the impending rainstorm that's forecasted for Saturday. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
