Three extra base-hits by the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team could not provide enough offense as West Chester University scored six runs off of two home runs and went on to win the opening game of their doubleheader 8-5 Friday afternoon at Hostelley Field in North Wales, Pennsylvania.
The Golden Rams then completed the sweep with a 7-4 win in game two.
The two losses drop Chestnut Hill's record to 7-18. The Golden Rams improve to 16-5-1.
The Griffins got a leadoff home run from
RJ Huth in the first inning, a two-RBI double from
Alexander Fascia in the fifth and an RBI triple from
Calvin McCall in the sixth inning. Fascia had an RBI single in the first to account for the Griffins' five runs in the opening game.
Dylan Broderick (2-3) took the loss, throwing four innings and gave up all eight runs which included a grand slam home run by WCU's Anthony Boccio in the fourth inning, making the score 8-2 at the time.
John DeMucci hit a two run home run in the Golden Ram's first at-bat to stake the visitors to a 2-0 lead before Huth's leadoff home run and later Fascia's single tied the game at 2-2.
West Chester added a solo run in the third and scored another on a bases loaded walk in the fourth before Boccio's four-run blast.
In the fifth inning,
Shawn LeVan singled to start the inning and Huth was hit by a pitch. LeVan went to third when
Justin Geiger reached on a fielder's choice. Geiger then stole his team leading 19
th base to put two runners in scoring position. Fascia then hit a long double to the left centerfield wall to score both runners.
One inning later the Griffins scored their final run when McCall launched a triple into centerfield to score
John Crane to make the core 8-5. WCU pitcher Kyle Lazer then retired the Griffins in order in their final at-bat to earn the save for Joe Sperone (4-1) who pitched 4.2 innings and allowed four runs.
In the nightcap, the Griffins jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, getting an infield groundout RBI from
Phoenix Bowman in the first and a two run single from Huth in the second.
The Golden Rams tied the game with three runs in the third and a took a 5-3 lead with two more in the fourth.Â
Aiden Myers led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to pull the Griffins within one, 5-4. The home run was the last hit Chestnut Hill got as the Golden Rams pitchers retired the final nine Griffin batters. Joe Kalick added a two-run home run in the seventh for West Chester to complete the scoring. Â
The baseball team returns to action when they open a three-game series with a single game at Jefferson University on April 3, 2024. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
