Jake Schweiker pitched eight effective innings and the Chestnut Hill College Baseball team got timely hits up and down the lineup as they defeated Wilmington University 12-3 Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Field in New Castle, Delaware.
The win, the Griffins' first against the Wildcats since the 2021 season, gives the Griffins a 10-22 mark overall and a 4-8 mark in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play.  The Wildcats fall to 14-13 overall and 3-5 in league contests.
Schweiker allowed just six hits and three runs while striking out six over eight innings of work to earn his second win of the season (2-3).Â
Colby Seelig came in to close out the game in the ninth, retiring the Wildcats in order on just eight pitches, striking out one.
Chestnut Hill got hits from eight of the nine starters in the batting order, including a pair of three hit games from leadoff batter
R.J. Huth and #9 hitter
Shawn LeVan, with both hitters belting home runs. Huth drove in three runs while LeVan,
Aiden Myers and
Phoenix Bowman had two RBI apeice.
LeVan put the Griffins on the board in the third inning with a solo home run, his second of the season. And giving CHC a 1-0 lead. Wilmington countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 2-1.
Chestnut Hill had their big inning in the fourth, sending ten batters to plate while scoring six times on seven hits. Â
Alexander Fascia and
Michael Pascoe singled to start the inning and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice from
Justin Geiger. Fascia scored on an infield groundout from
John Crane and Bowman doubled to score Pascoe with the go-ahead run. Back-to-back singles from
Calvin McCall and LeVan plated two more runs and Huth's double scored Levan with the fifth run of the inning. Huth then scored on Myer's single and the Griffins held a 7-2 lead.
Now leading 8-3, courtesy of Huth's solo home run in the sixth inning, the Griffins added four more runs in the seventh to round out the scoring.Â
Christian Peluso doubled to lead off the inning and three batters later scored off an infield error. A sacrifice fly from bowman scored Geiger with the second run and two batters later LeVan singled to load the bases.   Huth and Myers were both hit by a pitch in their successive at-bats scoring the final two Griffin runs.
Chestnut Hill's baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 13, 2024 when they host Wilmington University for a conference doubleheader at Hostelley Field. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
