Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Slater, Ballerini Guide Griffins to a 10-9 win over Post

Sam Slater scored three goals while Jake Ballerini scored the goal that put the Chestnut Hill College Men's Lacrosse team ahead for good as they defeated Post University 10-9 Saturday afternoon at Lamoy field in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The Griffins improve to 6-4 overall and solidify their position in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a 4-1 conference record.  The win was also the Griffins' first on the road this season.  The Eagles fall to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in CACC games.

Slater led the Griffins with his three goals, all in the first half while Cade Johnson and Will Duddy had two apiece.  Ballerini, Noah Hammon and Austin Derx had a goal apiece all in the fourth quarter.  Hammon added three assists to total four points on the day while Ballerini had a pair of assists to go along with his goal to finish the day with three points.

Faceoff specialist Brandon Berghaier led the Griffins with seven ground balls. Chase Snyder added five and Slater had four.  Daniel Grubb had three caused turnovers while Snyder and Tommy Austin had two apiece.  Julius Sorino had 13 saves in net for the Griffins.

Tied at 7-7 heading into the final period, Ballerini found the back of the net just 36 seconds into the fourth quarter, putting the Griffins ahead 8-7, a lead they would not relinquish.  A minute later Derx took a pass from Hammon and scored to push the Griffin's lead to two 9-7.  Chestnut Hill did not score again until the final two minutes of the game when Hammon notched his 28th goal of the season with 1:47 left with an assist from Ballerini, giving CHC a 10-8 lead.  The sophomore attack has had at least one goal in every game this season. Post pulled within one with 1:14 left but would come no closer.

Post scored the first goal of the game at the 9:40 mark before Slater answered with two straight scores, the first in the final three minutes of the opening quarter and the second at the 12:21 mark of the second period with an assist from Austin, giving the griffins a 2-1 lead.

Duddy, Johnson and Slater scored second quarter goals after the Eagles tied the game sat 2-2 to take a 5-3 lead at halftime.

Johnson scored the Griffins next goal, a man-up score that put the Griffins ahead 6-4 in the third quarter before the Eagles rallied to tie the game for the fourth time, this time at 7-7 as the two teams headed into the final period.

The men's lacrosse team is back in action on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, when they travel to face Felician University in Rutherford, New Jersey.  First faceoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
