Baseball Team Splits with Lightning

The Chestnut Hill College Baseball team got back on the winning track with a 5-2 win over Goldey-Beacom College in the opening game of their doubleheader at Doyle Field in Hockessin Delaware on Saturday.

The Lightning, however earned a split of the two-game set with a walkoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two, giving the hosts a 6-4 win.

The Griffins are now 11-26 overall and 7-13 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  The Lightning are now 27-14 overall and 11-7 in league games.

Dylan Broderick pitched seven quality innings in the opener, striking out five and allowing just two runs on seven hits to earn his third win of the season.   Marlon Rose pitched the last two innings to earn his second save of the season.

Trailing 2-0 in the third, the Griffins got back-to-back singles from Michael Pascoe and John Crane to score R.J. Huth (walked and stole second) and Alexander Fascia (walked) to tie the game at 2-2.

Huth scored the go-ahead run one inning later, following a Fascia single to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead.  Aiden Myers singled in the top of the eight to score Calvin McCall to make the score 4-2 and Huth stole home on the front end of a double steal for the Griffins final run.

Broderick put two runners on in the eighth inning before giving way to Rose who promptly got out of the jam.  Rose gave up a walk in the ninth but held the Lightning scoreless to secure the save in the 5-2 win.

In game two, Broderick made his first appearance as a position player taking over third base duties when Griffin third baseman Justin Geiger moved to catcher in the bottom of the fifth.   Trailing 4-2 in the sixth, Broderick batted for the first time in his collegiate career and hit a two-run home run over the left centerfield fence to tie the game at 4-4.

One inning earlier, Huth hit a solo home run to pull the Griffins within two 4-2.

The game remained tied after Broderick's home run until the Lightning's last at-bat when Braden Kolmansberger delivered a walk-off two-out two-run home run to win the game 6-4.

Jake Schweiker took the hard-luck loss, pitching a complete game while striking out five and giving up nine hits.   Eight different Griffins recorded a hit in the contest.

The baseball team returns to action on Sunday, April 21, 2024 when they host Dominican University for a CACC crossover doubleheader.  First pitch is at noon.
